Chapter 4 - The Breach

The grand foyer of the Moretti estate was brightly lit, the crystal chandeliers blazing down on polished marble floors.

When Evelyn walked in, flanked by the guards, the heavy front doors were wide open, letting in a swirl of damp night air and the harsh glare of emergency vehicle lights flashing outside.

Standing in the center of the foyer, looking wildly out of place among the towering marble columns and armed guards, was Grayson Hale.

He looked different than he had in the photos or in her nightmares. His designer suit was rumpled, his tie half-knotted, and his eyes bloodshot and unhinged. He smelled faintly of scotch and wet wool, his chest heaving as he stared around the room with manic disbelief. Two of Luca's men had him by the arms, holding him upright while he struggled against their grip.

"Let go of me, you psychotic thugs!" Grayson screamed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "Do you have any idea who my father is? Do you know what kind of federal investigation I'm going to rain down on this shithole?"

He wrenched his arm free, stumbling forward—and then his eyes locked onto Evelyn standing by the hallway archway.

A triumphant, vicious grin spread across his face.

"There she is," Grayson sneered, pointing a trembling finger at her. "There's my runaway whore. Did you really think you could hide behind these gangsters, Evelyn? Did you think a little dress-up game as a maid was going to save you from your responsibilities?"

Evelyn froze, the air leaving her lungs. Every instinct she had spent years burying—the cowering, the compliance, the crushing terror of his hand coming down across her face—threatened to paralyze her.

Grayson took a lurching step toward her, his expression darkening into pure rage. "You embarrassed my family. You stole my son. And now you're going to come back home where you belong, or I swear to God I'll—"

He didn't finish the threat.

A shadow detached itself from the grand staircase behind him.

Luca Moretti walked down the steps with slow, deliberate grace. He wasn't wearing a jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, corded muscle and faint dark ink tracing up his wrist. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly, terrifyingly bored.

Grayson turned around, blinking against the imposing presence of the man stepping into his path. "Who the hell are you? Get out of my way. I'm taking my wife back."

Luca stopped two feet from Grayson. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't shout. He simply looked down at the senator's son as if inspecting a particularly disgusting bug he found on his shoe.

"You broke through my security gate," Luca said quietly. "You damaged municipal-grade property. You trespassed on private land."

"I am Grayson Hale!" the senator's son yelled, jabbing a finger toward Luca's chest. "My father is Judge Robert Hale! The police commissioner is having dinner at our house on Friday! If you don't hand her over right now, I will personally see to it that every single criminal enterprise operating out of this estate is raided, dismantled, and put away for life!"

Silence descended on the foyer. The guards didn't move. The staff standing by the kitchen doors held their breath.

Luca slowly lowered his gaze from Grayson's face down to the hand—the manicured, trembling hand that Grayson had been using to point aggressively at Evelyn.

Then, Luca raised his eyes back up.

"Who touched you?"

The question wasn't directed at Grayson. It was spoken into the quiet space of the room, addressed solely to the woman standing by the archway.

Evelyn swallowed hard. She looked at Grayson—at the man who had broken her bones, who had terrorized her sleep, who had hunted her across state lines—and then she looked at Luca.

"He did," Evelyn said, her voice steady, clear, and carrying across the entire foyer. "For four years. Every time he didn't like my tone. Every time he lost a case. Every time he drank too much."

Grayson's face went white. He tried to laugh, a desperate, jittery sound. "She's lying! She's mentally unstable! She fell down the stairs, everyone knows she's clumsy—"

Luca didn't blink. He didn't blink, and he didn't raise his voice.

"Take him down to the basement," Luca told his men.
