Chapter 3 - The Interrogation Room Trap**

Within three hours, the sterile waiting room of the hospital had been transformed into an official staging ground for the Columbus Police Department’s Special Investigations Division. Two detectives—Detective Miller and Detective Vance—had arrived swiftly, taking formal depositions from Abigail, my parents, and myself, backed up by Dr. Vance’s ironclad medical toxicology report.
The trap was set with ruthless efficiency.
Brandon and Brenda were still sitting in the public lobby, believing they were waiting to "discipline" us for kidnapping Abigail out of their pristine colonial home. Instead, at 8:00 PM, two uniformed officers approached them, politely informing them that hospital administration wanted to hold a family conference regarding Abigail’s medical status in a private conference suite on the third floor.
Unsuspecting and entirely arrogant, Brandon swaggered into the conference room first, with Brenda trailing closely behind, wearing her trademark sweet, manipulative smile.
“This has gone far enough,” Brandon complained loudly, tossing his car keys onto the mahogany table. “Abigail is my wife, and taking her away from our home is a criminal offense. We want her discharged immediately, or we’ll file charges against—urgh!”
Brandon stopped dead in his tracks.
He had finally noticed who was sitting around the table. My father, built like a brick wall, sat near the door. Detective Miller and Detective Vance sat across from them in crisp detective jackets. And I sat right in the center, flanked by copies of the lab reports and the amber bottle resting inside a clear plastic forensic evidence bag.
Brenda’s sweet smile instantly curdled into a mask of bitter panic. Her eyes darted toward the door, but two police officers had already stepped inside, closing and locking it behind them.
“What... what is the meaning of this?” Brenda stammered, putting her hand over her chest in a theatrical display of faux-innocence. “Brandon, why are the police here? These people are harassing us!”
Detective Miller didn't stand up. He simply slid the forensic toxicology report across the table until it stopped right in front of Brandon’s coffee cup.
“Sit down, Mr. Prescott,” Detective Miller commanded, his voice deep and authoritative. “Before you start talking about legal rights, you might want to review the chemical analysis of the home remedy your mother personally brewed and administered to your six-month-pregnant wife every single morning.”
Brandon frowned, looking down at the paper. “What are you talking about? It’s just natural vitamins! Mom read about it online—it’s supposed to help with baby strength!”
“It’s lead acetate and industrial boric acid,” I interrupted, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. I stood up slowly, leaning over the table to look my cowardly brother-in-law directly in the eye. “Heavy metal poison, Brandon. Your mother was poisoning my sister to cause a miscarriage, and you were the one carrying the cup to her bed like a good little lapdog.”
Brandon went completely white. He whipped his head around to stare at his mother, panic flooding his features. “Mom... is that true? What did you put in that bottle?!”
Brenda’s mask completely shattered. The sweet, fragile elderly woman routine vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by a venomous, snarling harpy.
“She was useless!” Brenda shrieked, slamming her fists onto the table so hard the water glasses rattled. “That girl contributed nothing to our family! She was weak, she complained about morning sickness, and she was going to tie down my son with a baby that would drain his finances! I wanted a clean slate for Brandon—a wealthy, sophisticated woman from our country club circle, not some working-class girl who couldn't even keep a house properly clean!”
The confession echoed off the conference room walls, crystal clear and absolute.
Detective Miller pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt, standing up slowly. “Brenda Prescott, you are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, conspiracy to commit bodily harm, and poisoning a vulnerable adult. And Brandon Prescott—you are under arrest as an accessory before and after the fact, for criminal negligence and aiding in the administration of lethal toxins to your pregnant spouse.”
“No! You can't do this! I’m a respected businessman!” Brandon screamed, thrashing as the handcuffs snapped around his wrists with a sharp click.

Brenda was already sobbing hysterically, cursing us all as the second officer hauled her backward out of her chair. But as they were dragged out of the room toward the county jail cells, their little empire of cruelty was already crumbling into dust.
