Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Jacket**

The courtroom froze completely. Even Daniel’s high-priced attorney stopped turning the pages of her brief, caught off guard by the unexpected poise in the boy’s voice.
Lucas didn't wait for permission. With slow, deliberate movements, his small fingers slid inside the deep inner pocket of his oversized winter jacket. The entire room watched, transfixed, as his hand emerged clutching a small, heavy black object.
Daniel’s face, which had maintained its arrogant, unshakeable composure for the entire morning, suddenly went completely, sheet-white. The confident color vanished from his cheeks, leaving him looking like a ghost. He lurched half an inch forward in his chair, his eyes locking onto his son’s hand with a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
“Lucas... put that down,” Daniel muttered, his voice cracking slightly, the polished corporate mask instantly shattering under the weight of sudden terror.
Lucas ignored him entirely. He turned and placed the object carefully on the edge of the clerk’s wooden desk—a small, professional digital voice recorder with a blinking red light.
The judge leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she looked from Daniel’s terrified expression down to the device. “What is this, young man?”
“It’s a record of what happens when the doors are closed, Your Honor,” Lucas said steadily, his voice remarkably calm for a nine-year-old. “My dad told us that if we didn't tell the court-appointed evaluator that we wanted to live with him full-time, Mom would lose us forever because she has no money. He said he would make sure she never saw us again. And... and he told us what to say when people asked about our home life.”
A sharp collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Emily’s hand flew to her mouth, tears instantly flooding her eyes as the horrifying reality of what her sons had been carrying alone in secret washed over her.
Daniel stood up abruptly, knocking his expensive leather chair backward against the floor with a loud crash. “Objection! This is inadmissible! The child has been coached by his bitter, unstable mother to plant evidence and fabricate stories!”
“Sit down, Mr. Carter, before I have the bailiff remove you from this courtroom!” the judge commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. She turned to the court clerk. “Take that device. Have our technical specialist verify the audio files immediately.”
Within minutes, a tech specialist hurried into the courtroom, plugged the recorder into the master audio system, and handed a secure transcript to the judge. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the rain drumming aggressively against the tall glass windows outside.
The judge put on her reading glasses, scanning the digital transcript. As her eyes moved across the lines of text, the color in her own face hardened into a mask of pure fury. She looked up from the paper and fixed a glacial stare directly upon Daniel, who was now sweating profusely despite the cool air conditioning of the room.
“Mr. Carter,” the judge said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You claimed under oath that you have fostered a loving, supportive, and emotionally secure environment for your children. Yet, this recording—captured over the past three months inside your luxury condo—contains hours of verbal intimidation, psychological manipulation, threats to destroy their mother financially, and explicit instructions on how to lie to the court.”

Daniel swallowed hard, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Your Honor, it’s out of context... it’s deepfake technology, it’s—”
“It is a federal crime to tamper with or fabricate judicial evidence, Mr. Carter,” the judge interrupted sharply. “And it is child endangerment of the highest order.”
