Chapter 3 - The Thirteen Calls**

The onslaught was instantaneous and overwhelming.

Calls. Text messages. Voicemails flooding my inbox.

My brother-in-law Richard called me thirteen times in four consecutive minutes. My mother left a hysterical voice message where she was crying so loudly and incoherently that I could barely parse a single word. Vanessa sent a single, frantic line written entirely in capitalized terror:

*WHAT DID YOU DO?!*

I calmly picked up my cup of black coffee, took a slow sip, and stared at the dense federal compliance files spread out across my kitchen table. I whispered into the empty room, “You should’ve treated my children better while you still had the chance.”

A second later, my phone buzzed with a direct text message from Richard himself.

*What gift are you talking about, Elena? Answer the damn phone! Vanessa is hysterical!*

Instead of calling him, I opened a secure, encrypted email draft on my laptop. I attached the complete forensic audit report—fourteen pages of indisputable bank routing numbers, forged corporate signatures, and illegally diverted funds totaling over $1.4 million directly traced to Richard’s offshore shell accounts. I copied the regional federal prosecutor and the senior partners of Richard’s corporate board on the hidden carbon-copy line.

With a steady click of the mouse, I hit send.

Then I picked up my cell phone, unlocked the screen, and finally dialed Richard’s direct line. He answered on the very first ring, his voice cracking with panic.

“Elena! What the hell is wrong with you? Why are you sending out insane texts? Mom is having a panic attack, and Vanessa is losing her mind! What gift are you talking about?!”

“Check your corporate email inbox, Richard,” I said smoothly, my voice as cold as winter ice.

“What? My email? Why would I—?”

“Just open it,” I interrupted.

I heard the frantic clicking of computer keys through the speaker, followed by the heavy, shuddering intake of his breath. The arrogant, slick corporate executive facade vanished in a single fraction of a second.

“Oh... oh God,” Richard choked out, the color visibly draining from his voice. “Elena... you... you didn't.”

“I did,” I replied evenly. “Every single falsified invoice, every shell company transfer, every dollar you stole from your company to fund your lavish lifestyle and buy my parents’ fake affection—it’s all there. The federal prosecutor and your board of directors received the exact same PDF three seconds ago.”

“Elena, please!” Richard screamed, his voice pitching up into absolute terror. “You can’t do this! This will ruin me! I’ll go to federal prison! Vanessa will leave me! The kids—”

May you like

“Oh, you're worried about kids now?” I cut him off, my fury finally snapping the leash. “You sat at that table today and watched your son humiliate mine. You laughed while my daughter was made to feel like she didn't exist. You thought you were untouchable because of my parents' money and your fake status. Well, your bill just came due, Richard.”

I ended the call and blocked his number permanently.
