Chapter 9 - The House Restored

By the end of the month, the master bedroom closet still smelled faintly of Janet’s expensive perfume, but Luke had already hired a professional cleaning crew to strip the house down and air it out.

The minimalist, sterile art Janet had forced upon the living room walls was boxed up and left in the garage for her to pick up. In its place, Luke and Mason hung back the original family portraits, including the large framed photo of Sarah smiling brightly on a beach in Maui, holding a four-year-old Mason on her shoulders.

The kitchen regained its warmth. The smell of fresh coffee, home-cooked meals, and baking bread replaced the cold, judgmental aura Janet had imposed.

Even the neighborhood felt different. Brenda, Janet’s gossiping sister, had stopped calling entirely once she realized her sister’s gold-digging scheme had crashed and burned in spectacular fashion.

On a crisp Saturday afternoon, the front door opened, and the familiar, heavy thud of drumbeats rolled through the hallways.

Mason was behind his drum set, completely in the zone. He wasn't holding back anymore. Every crash of the cymbals, every tight roll of the snare, felt like a declaration of freedom.

Luke stood in the doorway of the living room, leaning against the frame with a mug of coffee in his hand, watching his son play with a wide, genuine smile on his face.

There was no one to complain. There was no one to lock the door. There was only the music, the house that belonged to them, and a family that had finally survived the storm.
