Chapter 3 - The Confrontation at 36,000 Feet

The "Fasten Seatbelt" sign chimed off as the Boeing 737 leveled out at cruising altitude, cutting through a sea of fluffy white clouds that stretched endlessly toward the horizon.

The cabin around us had settled back into its normal, mundane rhythm. Passengers were unfolding tray tables, opening magazines, and plugging headphones into their devices. To them, Tyler’s public declaration of love was just a brief, quirky piece of mid-flight entertainment to pass the time before beverage service.

To me, it was an execution order.

My mind was no longer paralyzed by shock; it had hardened into cold, razor-sharp steel. The hurt, the humiliation, and the betrayal curdled inside me, transforming instantly into protective, unyielding fury. He had humiliated me. He had humiliated my son. He had used his uniform, his aircraft, and his authority to broadcast his infidelity to a captive audience.

And he expected to land in Minneapolis, walk off the plane into the arms of his mistress, and pretend like his real family didn't exist three hundred miles away in an Ohio suburb.

Not on my watch.

"Mom, what are we going to do?" Mason whispered, clutching his crayon drawing so tightly the paper began to tear at the creases. "Are we going home?"

"We are going to go talk to your dad," I said firmly, unbuckling my seatbelt with a sharp metallic snap.

"We can't go up there! The sign says flight deck unauthorized!"

"We aren't going to the flight deck," I replied, standing up in the narrow aisle and smoothing down my jeans. "We are going to find Chloe."

I didn't have to look far.

As I marched down the narrow aisle toward the forward galley, my eyes scanned the jumpseat area. Sitting near the forward service station, scrolling casually through her phone with a smug, self-satisfied smile playing on her lips, was a young woman with perfectly styled blonde hair, heavy makeup, and a silver airline wings pin pinned proudly to her navy blue lapel.

Chloe.

She looked up as I approached, her eyes narrowing slightly at the intense, predatory expression frozen on my face. She clearly recognized me from the employee lounge photos Tyler kept hidden in his digital cloud, or perhaps she simply sensed the raw, volatile storm I was carrying.

"Excuse me," I said, my voice cutting through the galley hum with surgical precision. "Are you Chloe Vance?"

She blinked, standing up slowly, trying to maintain an air of corporate untouchability. "Yes? Can I help you? Passengers aren't typically allowed up in the forward galley during—"

Before she could finish her sentence, I reached out, grabbed a half-filled plastic cup of ice water resting on the counter, and dumped it directly over her pristine, immaculate blouse.

A sharp gasp escaped her lips as the ice cubes bounced off her collarbone and drenched her uniform shirt, turning the white fabric instantly translucent.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Chloe shrieked, stumbling backward against the galley cart, her face flushing a furious, ugly crimson. "Security! Assistance in the forward galley!"

"You like public broadcasts, don't you, Chloe?" I asked, stepping right into her personal space, my voice dropping into a low, lethal hiss that made her stop screaming. "You like hearing your name echoed across airplanes?"

Passengers in the first few rows turned around in their seats, craning their necks to watch the sudden escalation.

At that exact moment, the forward flight deck door clicked. The heavy security latch slid back, and the door swung open.

Tyler stepped out of the cockpit, wiping a casual smile off his face, likely coming out to check on his flight attendants or grab a cup of coffee before the descent prep.

His eyes locked onto the forward galley.

He saw Chloe, dripping wet, shivering, and glaring with pure venom.

Then, his eyes shifted past her.

And landed squarely on me.

And standing right behind me, clutching a crumpled crayon drawing against his chest with tear-stained cheeks, was Mason.

The color drained from Tyler’s face so fast he looked like a corpse under fluorescent lights. The confident, arrogant swagger vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, apocalyptic terror.

"H-Hannah... M-Mason?" Tyler stammered, his hands flying up as if trying to push physical walls away. "What... what are you doing here? How is this possible?"
