Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Showdown**

The county courthouse was bustling with activity when I walked through the heavy mahogany doors, dressed in a sharp navy blue pantsuit that projected absolute confidence. Lily was safely staying with a trusted family advocate at the sanctuary, leaving me free to fight for her future without distraction.
Sitting across the aisle at the defendant's table were Vanessa and my mother.
Vanessa looked unhinged, her hair hastily pulled back, wearing an expensive designer dress that felt wildly out of place in a criminal courtroom. Mom sat beside her, glaring at me with eyes full of pure, venomous hatred, whispering frantic instructions to their high-priced defense attorney.
Judge Katherine Sterling presided over the bench. She was a legendary jurist known for her razor-sharp intellect and zero tolerance for familial violence or manipulation.
“We are here for the preliminary evidentiary hearing in the matter of State versus Vanessa Rivera and Eleanor Brooks,” Judge Sterling announced, adjusting her glasses.
The defense attorney stood up smoothly. “Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of all charges. This unfortunate incident was merely a domestic accident magnified by a disgruntled mother seeking to weaponize the family court system.”
Judge Sterling raised an eyebrow, leaning forward. “An accident? Counsel, your client allegedly smashed a five-year-old child’s face into a table because of a piece of cake, while the co-defendant physically restrained the mother. Let’s look at the medical evidence before we throw around the word accident.”
My attorney stepped up to the podium, opening a thick leather portfolio.
“Your Honor, we submit Dr. Marcus’s complete pediatric trauma report, photographic evidence of the child’s facial contusions, and sworn statements from the responding emergency medical technicians,” my attorney stated clearly.
The judge reviewed the documents page by page, her expression growing darker with every second.
When she finished, Judge Sterling looked up, fixing her piercing gaze directly on Vanessa and my mother.
“This court has seen many tragic cases, but the sheer callousness displayed here—protecting an adult perpetrator while a five-year-old child lay unconscious with a concussion—is appalling,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice ringing across the silent courtroom.
Vanessa stood up abruptly, unable to control herself. “She stole my cake! She ruins everything! Everyone always protects her!”
“Sit down, Ms. Rivera, or I will have the bailiff remove you in handcuffs right now!” Judge Sterling thundered, banging her gavel sharply.
Vanessa collapsed back into her chair, trembling with rage.
Judge Sterling picked up her pen, signing the formal trial binding documents with swift, decisive strokes.
“I find probable cause on all felony counts for Vanessa Rivera and misdemeanor accessory charges for Eleanor Brooks. Bail is revoked due to witness intimidation risks. Case proceeds to trial next month.”
The heavy gavel came down one final time.

Mom let out a gasping cry of shock as two bailiffs stepped forward, gripped Vanessa and my mother by their arms, and led them away through the side doors toward the holding cells.
I sat quietly at my table, watching them go. The fear they had instilled in me for decades evaporated into thin air.
