Chapter 3 - Unlocking the Digital Vault**

The screen of the phone illuminated Mark’s grim, set jaw in the dim light of the entryway.

He pressed the power button, and the lock screen immediately flashed an incoming text message preview from an unsaved number: “Package secured. Meet at the usual spot by midnight.”

Mark’s breathing hitched. With trembling fingers, he stared at the device that his mother had aggressively tried to smuggle out of the house.

“You stole her phone,” Mark said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. It wasn't a question; it was a death sentence for any remaining shreds of trust between a mother and her son.

“I didn't steal anything! She must have dropped it in my bag by accident!” his mother lied frantically, standing outside the threshold with her hands raised, though her eyes darted nervously toward her car. “Mark, honey, open your eyes! Your wife is unstable! She’s imagining things, and her sister is attacking me because she’s jealous of our family!”

“Shut up,” Mark whispered. Just two words, but they carried the weight of an avalanche.

He turned away from the door, walked back into the living room, and sat down heavily on the sofa while cradling his infant son with one arm. I followed closely behind, keeping watch. Mark tapped the screen, entering the four-digit security pin that only my sister and he knew—or so we thought.

Except the phone didn't lock him out. It opened instantly.

His mother had somehow cracked the code, or watched my sister type it out during one of her invasive, uninvited visits.

As the home screen loaded, Mark opened the messaging applications, cloud backups, and photo albums. What we found inside made our blood run cold. There were hidden folders containing screenshots of my sister’s private medical records, bank statements, personal journal entries, and a chilling log of covert audio recordings captured inside the nursery over the past two months.

Worse still, there was a series of outgoing messages sent from my sister’s phone to an unknown recipient, attempting to establish fake evidence that my sister was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was unfit to care for a child.

“She was setting her up,” I whispered, looking over Mark’s shoulder as the full, monstrous scope of the plot came into focus. “She wasn't just trying to control the baby... she was trying to have my sister committed so she could take full custody of your son.”

Mark didn't answer. He stared at the glowing screen, tears of pure fury finally spilling over his eyelashes and tracking down his cheeks. He looked down at the tiny, innocent baby resting peacefully against his chest, completely unaware of the dark storm that had just narrowly missed consuming him.

“I trusted her,” Mark choked out, his voice cracking with unbearable grief and betrayal. “I defended her every single time my wife said she was crossing boundaries. I told my wife she was just being sensitive.”

“You didn't know,” I said gently, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder. “None of us knew how far she was willing to go.”

Suddenly, the front door rattled violently. Outside, his mother was screaming curses, pounding her fists against the glass, demanding her car keys and her belongings back.

“Mark! Open this door right now or I swear I’ll call the police and tell them your unhinged sister-in-law assaulted an elderly woman!” she shrieked.

Mark stood up slowly, gently handing the sleeping baby to me. He walked over to the landline phone on the kitchen counter, picked up the receiver, and dialed three numbers that would change all of our lives forever.

“Hello, dispatch? I need to report a break-in, child endangerment, and felony theft at my residence,” Mark said, his voice steady as a rock. “And I have the digital evidence right here in my hand.”
