Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth in the Footage**

Thirteen missed text messages flashed across my phone screen, all originating from Luca, and not a single one contained an ounce of concern for Fiona’s physical or emotional well-being. Instead, his frantic messages were entirely consumed by pathetic damage control: he complained that I had embarrassed the family, claimed that Wendy was utterly devastated by my “defiant outburst,” and whined that restaurant guests were “getting the wrong idea” about his mother’s pristine reputation. He never once bothered to ask if our toddler was okay. Just as I was about to turn my phone off entirely to block out his toxic noise, a new notification popped up on the screen—this time from Luca’s younger cousin, Kelly. Kelly had spent a portion of the evening sitting across the table, casually recording videos of the birthday candles and family toasts on her phone. Her accompanying message sent a sudden, freezing chill straight down my spine: “Jessi, I’ve been debating whether to send this to you, but after what happened, you need to see the whole video. Not just the part after Wendy stood up. Watch closely”. My hands shook slightly as I tapped the video file and pressed play, watching the ambient noise of the banquet fill the quiet apartment room. The recording had started nearly eleven minutes before Wendy’s violent outburst, capturing the casual ebb and flow of table conversation. As I stared at the screen, my breath hitched. Roughly halfway through the clip, Wendy leaned across the centerpieces, her expression cunning and conspiratorial, and whispered something directly into Luca’s ear—words that had been entirely drowned out by background chatter during the live event. On the screen, Luca didn’t look surprised, confused, or defensive; instead, he nodded deliberately, muttered a short reply back to his mother, and then both of them turned their heads in unison to stare coldly and calculatingly directly at my daughter Fiona, who was happily playing with her napkin. That horrifying visual confirmation made my stomach violently churn. Wendy’s cruel, premeditated declaration about Fiona having “defective genetics” hadn’t been an accidental slip of the tongue or a sudden loss of temper driven by senile rage. It was a rehearsed, coordinated narrative. And my own husband had not only known it was coming—he had actively approved it. The realization hit me with the force of a freight train: their hostility toward my daughter ran much deeper and darker than I had ever dared to imagine, and I needed to know what game they were playing before they realized I had discovered their plot.
