Chapter 3 - The Traitor Unmasked

"Federal/Local Police! Nobody move!"
Heavy tactical gear clacked against the hardwood floor as half a dozen armed officers swarmed the hallway and poured into the kitchen. Flashlights cut blinding white beams through the dim room, illuminating dust motes and casting jagged shadows against the cabinets.
Daniel threw his hands up in the air, his face twisted into a masterpiece of theatrical horror and grief.
"Officers! Thank God you're here!" Daniel cried out, his voice cracking with rehearsed despair. "It’s my wife and son! We were eating dinner and suddenly they collapsed! I don't know what happened—some kind of terrible allergic reaction or food poisoning! I was just trying to revive them!"
I kept my eyes half-closed, lying perfectly still on the cold tile, waiting for the right moment to tear away his carefully constructed mask.
The lead officer, a tall, stern-faced lieutenant with sharp eyes, stepped into the kitchen. Behind him rushed two paramedics with medical bags and a stretcher.
"Don't touch them, sir. Step back against the counter," the lieutenant commanded, his hand resting firmly on his holstered firearm. He looked down at Noah and me, his expression darkening as he noted our unnatural stiffness. "Paramedics, check vitals immediately. Looks like neurotoxin or heavy sedative symptoms."
The paramedics dropped to their knees beside us, slipping pulse oximeters onto our fingers and shining penlights into our eyes. The cool, reassuring touch of medical professionals grounding us in reality felt like salvation.
"Officer, you have to help us!" Daniel babbled frantically, taking a step forward. "My wife, she’s non-responsive—"
"I said step back, Mr. Miller," the lieutenant interrupted coldly, pulling a digital recorder from his tactical vest pocket. He pressed play.
Instantly, the small kitchen speakers filled with a crystal-clear audio recording played back at maximum volume:
“It's done... soon they will both be gone... They won't be a problem after tonight.”
Daniel’s theatrical panic vanished in a single microsecond. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh flashlight beams. He stared at the recorder as if it were a venomous snake.
"Where... where did you get that?" Daniel whispered, his voice losing all its booming authority.
The lieutenant clicked stop and pocketed the recorder. "Your phone, Mr. Miller. The 911 dispatch center records every inbound call, and our cyber unit managed to ping an open line connected to your active Bluetooth headset sitting right there on the kitchen island. You left your call channel open while you were talking to your co-conspirator."
Daniel’s head whipped around toward the kitchen island, his eyes locking onto his wireless earbuds resting beside the coffee maker. He had been so focused on staging the crime scene that he had forgotten he was still connected to an encrypted VoIP call with his mistress, Brenda.
"That's... that's out of context!" Daniel stammered, his facade completely shattering as he lunged forward. "It's an AI deepfake! The police are framing me!"
Before Daniel could take another step, two tactical officers tackled him to the floor, slamming his face against the linoleum and clicking heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists.

"Daniel Miller, you are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy, and poisoning," the lieutenant declared, reading him his rights while Daniel thrashed uselessly against the floor.
I finally opened my eyes fully, pushing myself up onto my elbows as the paralysis began to wear off under the influence of an emergency reversal antidote administered by the paramedic.
