Chapter 4 - The Confrontation**

By 7:00 P.M., my phone was buzzing incessantly against the car console. It was David, calling from his office and eventually from the driveway of our empty house. When I answered, his voice crackled with irritation rather than worry.
“Where the hell are you?” David demanded over the speakerphone, background noise indicating he was pacing our kitchen. “I came home and the house is pitch black. Chloe’s school called an hour ago saying she was signed out early. What kind of game are you playing?”
“We are at the hospital, David,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
There was a sudden, sharp pause on the line. The tone of his voice shifted instantly from annoyance to defensive panic. “The hospital? Why would you take her to the hospital without telling me? It’s just teenage dramatics, I told you that weeks ago when I brought her in—'
“Yes, David,” I interrupted, cutting through his tirade like a knife. “I know you brought her in five weeks ago. And I know the doctors gave you a clear follow-up plan that you chose to throw in the trash.”
Silence stretched across the line—a heavy, guilty silence that confirmed every suspicion I harbored.
“That’s—that’s a misunderstanding,” David stammered, his polished confidence crumbling instantly. “The doctor exaggerated. It wasn't an emergency. We didn't need to waste money on extra tests—'
“You didn't want to deal with it,” I said coldly. “You lied to our sick daughter. You manipulated her into keeping secrets from me, and you risked her health because it was inconvenient for your routine.”
“Listen to me, Elena, don’t blow this out of proportion—” he started shouting.
I hung up the phone, powered it completely off, and tossed it into the glove box.
Chloe looked over at me from the passenger seat, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and newfound awe. “Mom... what are we going to do?”

“We are going to check into a quiet motel near the medical center,” I said, offering her a reassuring smile as I started the engine. “And tomorrow, we start fighting back.”
We spent the next three days at the hospital while Chloe underwent specialized testing and began a proper treatment plan for her condition—a condition that required prompt medical management, which David’s negligence had dangerously delayed. During those hospital days, surrounded by professional nurses and doctors who actually listened, Chloe’s shoulders finally dropped. She smiled a real smile for the first time in months.
