Chapter 3 - The Twenty-Year Paper Trail**

Grace opened the heavy blue folder, revealing a meticulously organized mountain of documents that spanned two decades.

“Your Honor,” Grace began, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the courtroom. “Mr. Hale would have this court believe that my client, Mrs. Evelyn Hale, was nothing more than an unpaid domestic laborer who occasionally helped out around a restaurant. We are here to submit irrefutable evidence proving that for twenty years, Evelyn Hale was not only the operational backbone of Hale’s Bistro, but she was systematically defrauded out of her legal equity.”

Grace began pulling documents from the folder one by one, handing copies to the bailiff to distribute to the bench.

“Exhibit A: Original partnership incorporation papers from twenty years ago, bearing both Victor and Evelyn Hale’s signatures as fifty-percent equity holders before Victor secretly filed falsified corporate amendments behind her back in 2012,” Grace stated smoothly.

Victor’s face instantly drained of all color. The tan he had so carefully maintained from weekend golf trips vanished, leaving his skin a sickly, gray pallor.

“Exhibit B: Complete medical records, hospital admissions logs, and sworn affidavits from former head chefs and line cooks confirming that Evelyn Hale worked seventy-hour weeks without a salary, that her injuries were sustained directly on-site due to code violations Victor deliberately ignored, and that she was intentionally kept off formal payroll records to shield the business from tax liabilities and labor lawsuits.”

Grace didn't stop there. She pulled out bank statements, encrypted email printouts, and wire transfer logs.

“Furthermore, Your Honor, we have uncovered evidence that over the last three years, while Mr. Hale was publicly portraying himself as a self-made culinary genius, he systematically siphoned over two million dollars in corporate revenue from the restaurant’s primary operating accounts into secret offshore accounts registered under his girlfriend’s name—Melissa Cole—in an active attempt to conceal marital assets ahead of this very divorce.”

The courtroom erupted into a low murmur of absolute astonishment. Reporters sitting in the back row began scribbling furiously on their notepads.

Melissa went completely white in the gallery, sliding down in her seat as if she wished the wooden bench would swallow her whole.

For twenty years, I had watched Victor Hale charm bankers, local politicians, food critics, customers, and employees with effortless charisma. I had watched him take complex lies and turn them into inspiring stories that people eagerly wanted to believe.

But I had never, not once in all those years of marriage, seen him genuinely, utterly terrified.

Not until that exact moment.

Because Victor finally understood something that should have dawned on him the day he decided to betray the woman who built his empire from the ground up:

I hadn't come to court merely asking for half his restaurant.

I had come carrying twenty years of absolute, unvarnished receipts.
