Chapter 3 - The Whisper in the Dark**

The nursery door was cracked open about an inch, leaking a sliver of pale moonlight across the carpet. I crept forward like a ghost, holding my breath, every nerve ending in my body screaming that something was fundamentally, horrifyingly wrong in this house.

I peeked around the doorframe.

Ben was lying flat on his back on the nursery floor directly beneath Brenda's crib, his small fingers gripping one of the sturdy vertical wooden bars so tightly that his knuckles had turned ghostly white. He wasn't sleeping. His eyes were wide, staring up into the dark underside of the mattress where his baby sister slept safely above.

"It's okay, Brenda," he whispered into the dark, his voice trembling with a heartbreaking, fragile bravery.

I froze in the doorway, paralyzed by the surreal intensity of the moment. My lungs completely forgot how to draw air.

"I won't fall asleep this time," Ben continued, his voice cracking as a tear slipped down his cheek and caught the faint moonlight. "I'm staying right here to watch you."

My blood went instantly cold, turning to ice water in my veins. A suffocating wave of dizziness washed over me, and I had to grip the doorframe to keep from collapsing.

Then, in the dead silence of the night, he whispered the words that shattered my entire world into a million jagged pieces:

"I won't let Grandma do it again."

The room spun violently. For a terrifying second, I thought I was going to pass out right there on the rug.

*"Ben?"* I choked out, my voice barely escaping my constricted throat.

He jumped violently, gasping in terror as he scrambled backward out from under the crib, hitting his head against the rocking chair before looking up at me with sheer panic written across his face.

I rushed across the room, dropping to my knees on the hardwood floor and pulling my trembling son into my arms.

"Sweetheart, what... what did you just say?" I begged, my voice breaking into jagged sobs. "What does Grandma do?"

Ben buried his face into the crook of my neck, his little body shaking uncontrollably as heavy, silent sobs wracked his chest.

"I promised..." he sobbed into my shoulder, his words muffled and frantic. "I promised her I wouldn't tell!"

"Tell me what, baby? Please, you have to tell Mommy," I pleaded, cupping his wet face in my shaking hands, willing him to look at me. "You are safe. Nobody is going to hurt you or Brenda. What did you see?"

Ben looked up, glancing fearfully toward the crib where Brenda was sleeping peacefully, completely oblivious to the nightmare unfolding around her.

Then, looking back at me with eyes full of a seven-year-old trauma no child should ever carry, he told me everything, crying uncontrollably.
