Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The front hallway instantly filled with the crisp, unmistakable rustle of heavy uniforms and the sharp, polished click of combat boots stepping onto the foyer floor. Standing in the doorway wasn't a local process server or a standard civilian lawyer. Leading the contingent was Major Kevin Vance, senior investigator for the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), flanked by two armed federal military police officers in full dress gear, and closely followed by my civilian civil-rights attorney, Marcus Sterling, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Evelyn gasped, stumbling backward against the dining room sideboard and sending a decorative crystal bowl crashing to the floor in a shower of glittering shards. Austin’s face drained completely of color, his smartphone slipping from his numb fingers to bounce uselessly off the rug.

Major Vance strode into the dining room with absolute, unyielding authority, his uniform medals catching the overhead chandelier light. He didn't even glance at Evelyn or Gregory. He stopped directly beside my chair, snapped to a crisp, flawless military salute, and addressed me with formal precision.

“Colonel Prescott. Reporting as requested, Ma'am. The perimeter is secured, and all federal digital recording uplinks are active.”

“At ease, Major,” I replied crisply, returning the salute before turning my gaze back to the stunned, paralyzed assembly of lawyers at the table.

The senior partner in the charcoal suit scrambled backward in his chair, his hands flying up defensively. “Wait a minute—this is a private civil matter regarding a family estate! What jurisdiction does military criminal investigation have in a private Delaware residence?”

Mr. Sterling, my civilian attorney, stepped smoothly forward from the hallway, pulling a crisp set of federal court documents and military affidavits from his briefcase. He dropped them heavily onto the exact center of the table, right on top of the unsigned trust waiver forms.

“Jurisdiction is established under Federal Code Title 10, combined with active interstate wire fraud, extortion under color of duress, and ongoing systematic tampering with a protected military service member’s federally managed estate assets,” Sterling announced in a booming, courtroom-ready voice. He pointed a finger directly at the terrified senior attorney. “Furthermore, counselors, your clients have spent the last three weeks utilizing coercion, economic threats, and fraudulent misrepresentation to force an active-duty senior intelligence officer into signing away legally bound trust assets while operating under classified military deployment constraints. That crosses the line from civil probate dispute straight into federal felony territory.”

The female lawyer with the laptop frantically began hitting keys, trying to close her documents, but Major Vance stepped closer, placing a heavy, gloved hand gently on the corner of the desk. “I wouldn't touch those files, Counselor. Federal marshals and IRS financial crime investigators have already frozen all associated corporate accounts tied to Mr. Austin Prescott’s shell companies as of 18:00 hours this evening, following a preliminary audit of your late father’s estate.”

Austin let out a strangled, breathless cry, turning frantically toward Evelyn. “Mom! What are they talking about? What shell companies?!”

Evelyn couldn't even speak; her lips trembled uncontrollably as she stared at the federal badges gleaming in the hallway light, realizing that her meticulously planned ambush had just been converted into an airtight trap that had swallowed them whole.
