Chapter 2 - The Arrival of the White Knight**

By 3:00 AM, the storm outside Mercy Ridge Medical Center had escalated into a howling blizzard, rattling the double-paned windows of the VIP recovery wing. Inside Room 412—a heavily guarded, isolated suite overlooking the Chicago skyline—Lucia rested against an elevated stack of pillows. Her skin was still dangerously pale from the massive blood transfusion she had received during an emergency C-section two hours prior, but her eyes were alert and burning with cold fire.

The delivery had been harrowing, but successful. Her premature baby girl, tiny and fragile, was currently resting securely in the neonatal intensive care unit under twenty-four-hour guard, monitored by specialized pediatricians hired directly by Gerald Whitmore.

The door to the suite opened quietly.

A tall, impeccably tailored man in his late fifties stepped inside, shaking snowflakes from the shoulders of a dark cashmere overcoat. He wore rimless glasses, his silver-streaked hair brushed back with aristocratic precision, and his posture radiated the effortless, crushing authority of a man who didn't negotiate with kings—he bought and sold them.

Julian Sterling. Lucia’s father.

For four years, Dante Moretti had believed his wife came from a modest, ordinary background—a fabricated persona Lucia had adopted to escape the suffocating weight of her family’s true legacy. Dante had mocked her humble roots behind her back, convinced he had married down. He had no idea that Lucia was the sole heiress to Sterling Global, an international conglomerate whose net worth made the Moretti syndicate look like street-corner bookies.

Julian walked slowly to the side of the bed, his dark eyes sweeping over Lucia’s pale face, the IV drips, and the medical charts at the foot of the mattress. When he spoke, his voice was thick with suppressed fury.

“They told me downstairs that Moretti left you while you were crashing,” Julian said softly, resting a warm, trembling hand over his daughter’s cold fingers.

“He had a meeting with Vivian Ross,” Lucia replied, her voice steady and devoid of tears.

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “When I heard you were in labor, I mobilized our private security detail before my plane even touched down at O’Hare. Nobody enters this wing without my written authorization. Not Moretti. Not his thugs. Not his mother.”

Claudia Moretti, Dante’s fiercely controlling and patriarchal mother, had ruled the Moretti household like a medieval queen, treating Lucia as an incubator for her dynasty. The thought of Claudia anywhere near her newborn granddaughter made Lucia’s stomach turn.

“Where is Gerald?” Lucia asked, looking past her father.

“Downstairs wrapping up the initial injunctions,” Julian answered, pulling a velvet chair close to the bed and sitting down. “The divorce papers have already been stamped by Judge Harrison under seal. All Moretti Logistics corporate accounts, subsidiary shell companies, and real estate holdings tied to Dante’s personal portfolio have been placed under a mandatory federal and civil asset freeze.”

Julian paused, a cold, predatory smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Furthermore, sweetheart... you don't just own a stake in Moretti Logistics. You own eighty-two percent of their primary maritime freight routes through a silent subsidiary trust my father established thirty years ago. Dante never owned an empire, Lucia. He was merely managing our warehouse lease.”

Lucia closed her eyes, letting a profound wave of dark satisfaction wash over her. For years, Dante had lorded his power over her, treating her like a decorative ornament in his violent world. He had built his entire identity on the illusion that he was the apex predator of Chicago.

By sunrise, he was going to find out he was standing on glass.

“How is my daughter?” Lucia whispered.

“She’s a fighter, just like her mother,” Julian said, squeezing her hand gently. “The neonatologist says her vitals are stabilizing. She’s breathing on her own. But Lucia... Dante is going to come looking for you. He’s going to realize his accounts are locked, his shipments are grounded, and his wife has vanished into thin air. What do you want me to do when he tracks us down?”

Lucia opened her eyes, staring into the dark Chicago night beyond the glass.

“Let him come,” she said quietly. “Let him stand outside these doors and scream. Because this time, there is no twenty-minute timer. There is no Vivian Ross to save him. And he will finally learn what it means to lose everything.”
