Chapter 4 - The Lake Geneva Estate**

The private estate on the shores of Lake Geneva looked like a winter postcard, surrounded by towering pine trees blanketed in fresh, untouched snow. But as Roman’s SUV crept up the long, unplowed gravel driveway with its headlights switched off, the atmosphere felt charged with high-stakes tension.

Roman stepped out into the freezing midnight air, the snow crunching beneath his boots. He motioned for Marco and the security team to fan out and secure the perimeter quietly.

"Nobody breaches the main house unless I give the signal," Roman instructed quietly. "If she's in there, I go in alone."

He walked up the wooden steps of the wrap-around porch, his heart pounding against his ribs harder than it ever had during a cartel shootout. He approached the double glass front doors and looked inside.

The interior was warmly lit by a crackling stone fireplace. A Christmas tree stood in the corner, adorned with simple wooden ornaments. And sitting on a plush sofa facing the fire, wrapped in a heavy fleece blanket with a steaming mug in her hands, was Celeste.

She looked tired, her face pale and drawn, but there was an unmistakable aura of profound peace surrounding her that Roman had never seen in all the years they lived together in the Chicago penthouse.

Roman swallowed hard, lifted his hand, and knocked softly on the glass.

Inside, Celeste froze. Her head snapped toward the foyer doors. When she saw Roman standing out in the freezing snow, her relaxed expression instantly vanished, replaced by a wall of defensive caution.

She set her mug down on the coffee table, stood up slowly, and walked toward the door. She unlocked it and pulled it open just a few inches, holding the chain guard in place.

"How did you find me?" she asked, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly.

"Dante Moretti's men heard rumors on the docks," Roman answered immediately, his voice raw and exposed. "Celeste... open the door. Please. It's freezing out here."

"It was freezing in your penthouse long before I left, Roman."

"I know. I know I failed you," he confessed, taking a half-step closer, his eyes pleading. "I walked into the guest wing last week. I found the nursery you built in secret. I saw the books, the blanket, the little socks hanging in the closet."

Celeste’s breath hitched. For a fleeting second, the armor dropped from her eyes, revealing the deep hurt she had carried for months.

"I built it because I needed somewhere in that house where our daughter was wanted," she whispered softly. "Not as a trophy, not as an extension of my empire, but just as a little girl who deserved to be loved."

"She is loved!" Roman insisted, taking another step forward, ignoring the chain guard. "And so are you, Celeste. I was blind, I was arrogant, and I let the noise of my syndicate make me forget what actually mattered. I burned down my own life the night you walked out that elevator."

"Words are easy when you're cornered, Roman," she said, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Power is all you've ever known how to use."

"Then watch me throw it away," Roman said fiercely.

Before Celeste could reply, the sharp, deafening crack of a high-powered rifle shot shattered the silence of the snowy woods.

A bullet splintered the wooden doorframe just inches from Roman's head.

"Ambush!" Marco's voice bellowed through the encrypted comms earpiece. "Moretti's hit squad tracked us! They're coming through the tree line!"

Panic surged through the yard as automatic gunfire erupted from the shadows of the pine trees. Dante Moretti hadn't given up his information freely; he had used Roman's desperation as bait to lead a revenge strike.

"Get down!" Roman shouted, instinctively throwing his body against the door, snapping the chain guard with brute force, and pulling Celeste down behind the heavy oak entryway just as another volley of bullets riddled the glass panels.

"Roman, the baby!" Celeste cried out, curling into a protective ball.

"I've got you! I've got you!" Roman yelled over the roaring gunfire.

Outside, Marco and the Vascari enforcers returned fire with devastating tactical precision, turning the snowy lawn into a war zone. But the attackers were swarming from all sides, trying to breach the front porch.

Roman drew his Sig Sauer pistol, checked the magazine, and looked down at Celeste with a look of absolute, terrifying resolution.

"Stay behind this wall," he ordered, his voice brooking zero argument. "If anyone comes through that door other than Marco, you shoot them."

"Roman, no!" Celeste grabbed his sleeve. "Don't go out there!"

"I spent six years proving I could protect my empire while destroying my family," Roman said, pressing a gentle, desperate kiss to her forehead. "Let me spend the rest of my life protecting my family while I burn the empire to the ground."

He stood up, pivoted, and charged out into the freezing snow, returning fire against the assassins who had dared threaten his wife and unborn child.
