Chapter 4 - The True Heir

The interior of the SUV was warm, smelling faintly of leather and the lavender scent Claire always wore. She was sitting upright now, wrapped securely in my heavy wool coat, holding a cup of hot tea that Viktor had thoughtfully fetched from the staff quarters before the police arrived.

When I slid open the door and climbed inside, Claire looked up. Her eyes were bright, filled with a quiet, fierce resilience that had made me fall in love with her the day I met her.

"Is it over?" she whispered, taking a slow sip of the tea.

"It’s over," I said softly, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead. The angry purple bruising on her wrist caught the dashboard light, sending a fresh wave of protective anger through my veins. "They're gone. They've been arrested, their accounts are frozen, and they will never set foot on this property again."

Claire let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning her head against my shoulder. "I didn't sign the papers, Ethan. No matter what they threatened, I wouldn't let them take your father's memory. I knew you would come back."

"I know you did," I murmured, kissing the top of her head. "And because of your courage, everything my father intended for us is finally, securely ours."

An hour later, the police cruisers and federal black sedans had cleared out of the driveway, leaving the grand estate bathed in the quiet, peaceful glow of midnight snow. The mansion was finally silent—not with the suffocating silence of my past life, but with the clean, undisturbed stillness of a new beginning.

I carried Claire inside, walking past the shattered pen and the abandoned property deeds on the dining table. I took her straight upstairs to our master suite, drawing a hot bath infused with eucalyptus and soothing oils, washing away the bitter memory of the cold iron gates.

While Claire rested in bed, wrapped in silk sheets and sleeping peacefully, I sat down at my private mahogany desk in the corner of the study. I opened my laptop, bypassing three layers of military-grade encryption to access the core terminal of my global network.

Viktor’s face appeared on the high-resolution screen instantly, illuminated by the soft blue light of the monitor.

"Status report, Boss," Viktor said crisply from a command center halfway across the world. "The domestic assets of Margaret and Natalie Cole have been successfully segregated. Their offshore accounts in the Caymans have been flagged for federal audit under your directive. They won't see a single dime of liquid capital for the rest of their natural lives."

"Good," I replied calmly. "Ensure that their legal defense is blocked at every turn. I want them to experience what it feels like to have absolutely nothing, exactly the fate they intended for my wife."

"Consider it done, Ghost King," Viktor nodded, his expression grim. "Shall I pull you back into active command rotation? There are rumblings in the European sector—"

"No," I interrupted, closing the laptop lid with a definitive click that echoed softly in the quiet room. "My war is over, Viktor. From here on out, Ethan Cole stays right where he belongs."

I stood up, walked over to the bed, and slipped beneath the warm covers beside Claire. She stirred slightly, her hand instantly finding mine in the dark, her fingers interlocking with mine as if she wanted to make sure I was truly there.

I closed my eyes, listening to the steady, peaceful sound of her breathing, knowing that the shadows could finally wait.
