Chapter 4 - The Truth About the Mortgage

I didn't yell back. I didn't scramble to defend myself against Beverly’s hysterical web of lies. Instead, I slowly stood up from the armchair, walked over to the mahogany desk in the study, and retrieved a thick, heavy manila folder. I strolled back into the living room, stood directly in front of Bradley, and dropped the folder right into his chest, forcing him to catch it or let it fall to the floor. Bradley caught it instinctively, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Open it, Bradley," I instructed coldly. "Read every single word out loud so your mother can hear it, too." With trembling fingers, Bradley pulled out the crisp, official documents from the county recorder's office and financial institutions. His eyes scanned the first page, and the fierce, righteous color instantly drained completely from his face, leaving him looking as pale as a ghost.
"What... what is this?" Bradley stammered, his voice dropping an octave as he stared at the papers. "Read it," I repeated, my tone unyielding. Bradley swallowed hard and began reading aloud, his voice shaking. "‘Warranty Deed... sole and exclusive property of Clara Vance... purchased entirely through independent personal funds prior to and during marriage...’" He flipped the page, his hands trembling violently. "‘Mortgage statement... account number ending in 4092... paid in full by Clara Vance... zero balance...’" The living room fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Beverly stopped her theatrical sniffling, her eyes darting nervously between her son and the papers in his hands. "No... that's impossible," Beverly gasped, stepping forward. "Bradley told me he bought this house! He said it was his hard work that gave us this life!"
"Bradley lied to you to stroke his fragile ego, Beverly," I said smoothly, stepping closer so I could look down at my spineless husband. "For the past three years, Bradley’s entire salary has gone toward paying off his own luxury car lease, funding your monthly shopping sprees, and secretly wiring thousands of dollars behind my back to support Chloe’s endless string of failing business ideas. Meanwhile, every single cent of the mortgage, the property taxes, the homeowner's insurance, the groceries, and Lily's childcare has been paid exclusively out of my freelance accounts and consulting business. Legally, morally, and financially, Bradley is just another guest living in my house—rent-free, just like you." Bradley looked up at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of profound shame and absolute terror. "Clara... I... I can explain. I was just trying to keep the peace between my family and—" "You were trying to play the big provider while leeching off my hard work," I cut him off sharply, my voice slicing through his excuses like a razor blade.
