Chapter 4 - Turning the Tables

The chaos that erupted after Mrs. Sterling’s declaration was swift and merciless. Within two hours, building security guards appeared at every exit, handing out industrial-sized trash bags to every terrified employee while corporate auditors swarmed the conference rooms to inventory company assets. Nick locked himself in his corner office, refusing to come out until building management threatened to send in local law enforcement to physically remove him. As for me, I didn't have to leave the building at all; instead of walking out to my car with my cardboard box, Eleanor escorted me up four private elevator floors to the executive suite overlooking the entire city skyline.

The executive suite was breathtaking—flooded with natural sunlight, polished mahogany furniture, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offered a panoramic view of the glittering metropolis. Eleanor gestured for me to sit in a plush leather armchair while her personal assistant poured us both fresh, steaming coffee. "I don't need a box of belongings for you, Sebastian," Eleanor said warmly, taking a seat opposite me and folding her hands over her cane. "In fact, I think you'll find that your new office comes with significantly better perks than the cubicle downstairs."

Before I could process her words, the double doors of the suite opened, and a team of corporate attorneys walked in carrying thick leather binders and formal employment contracts. Eleanor slid a document across the polished mahogany table toward me. I looked down at the embossed gold lettering: Executive Vice President of Strategic Acquisitions and Community Partnerships – Vanguard Holdings. The starting salary listed at the bottom made my breath catch in my throat—it was more than triple what Nick had been paying me, complete with stock options, comprehensive healthcare for my family, and a dedicated corner office on the top floor.

"Mrs. Sterling... Eleanor," I stammered, looking up from the paper in sheer disbelief. "I... I can't accept this. This is too much. I just stopped to help someone on the side of the road; I didn't do it for a reward."

Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes softening with profound sincerity. "Sebastian, the world is full of ambitious people willing to step over dying bodies if it means closing a deal or climbing another rung on the corporate ladder. Compassion is rare. Integrity is priceless. Vanguard Holdings has plenty of brilliant strategists, but we desperately lacked leadership with a soul. I am not giving you a handout; I am investing in the kind of man this company needs at the top."

As I signed my name on the dotted line, my hand steady and my heart full, I realized that stopping on that cold stretch of highway hadn't ruined my life at all. It had broken open a door I never even knew existed. And the best part was yet to come, because downstairs, Nick Harrison was packing his own cardboard box, finally learning what it truly meant to lose everything.
