Chapter 2 - The Fracture Lines**

David stood in the doorway, chest heaving, his eyes sweeping across the catastrophic scene in a single, horrified glance. He took in the crying, flour-dusted baby in Martha's arms, the heavy metal colander sitting crookedly in the sink, the fresh blood leaking down his wife's brow onto her yellow rubber glove, and the dark, swelling purple contusion blooming across my cheekbone.
For a heartbeat, David froze, paralyzed by the sheer surrealism of the domestic horror show unfolding before him. He didn't ask for an explanation. He didn't waste time with polite inquiries. His face drained of color, replaced instantly by a dark, simmering rage that belonged to a man who had finally realized he was living with a monster.
He crossed the kitchen floor in two massive strides, his boots snapping against the scattered flour.
Martha shrieked, tightening her stranglehold on the baby and twisting her body completely away from her husband, shielding Leo with her blood-soaked shoulder.
"David, stay back! She attacked me!" Martha screamed, her voice cracking into a hysterical pitch as she pointed a gloved finger at me, blood dripping off her chin. "The nanny—she's insane! She tried to murder me with the mortar!"
David ignored her completely, his focus locked entirely on the child. "Give me the baby, Martha. Right now."
"No! She wants to take him from us! She's working with the agency to ruin this family!" Martha sobbed hysterically, backing away until her spine hit the pantry door.
I kept my hands raised defensively, speaking calmly to keep David from making a reckless move that Martha might capitalize on. "David, look at his right ankle. She pinned him under the colander with a tight ligature. He's dehydrated, he's terrified, and she's losing her mind."
David’s gaze dropped to Leo’s tiny, exposed foot. He saw the angry, purple-red pressure ring cutting deep into the infant's skin. The illusion shattered completely. The last lingering shreds of doubt vanished from his eyes, replaced by a devastating, gut-wrenching realization of what his wife was capable of behind closed doors.
"Martha," David said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, icy whisper that chilled the air in the room. "Open your arms and give me our son. This instant."
"Don't you trust me?" she cried, her voice trembling as she clutched the screaming baby tighter. "After everything I've done to build this home for us?"
"You didn't build a home, Martha. You built a cage," David snarled, lunging forward with lightning speed.
Martha dodged him with surprising agility, ducking past the kitchen island and heading toward the back utility hallway that led to the garage. "You can't have him! He's mine to protect!" she shrieked, her footsteps echoing down the hall.
"Go! Cut her off at the garage door!" David yelled to me, pointing toward the side corridor while he sprinted in direct pursuit of his unhinged wife.
Adrenaline surged through my veins, pushing past the throbbing pain in my cheek. I didn't hesitate. I dashed through the dining room, cutting through the pantry door shortcut that intersected the mudroom just seconds ahead of her frantic pace.

As Martha rounded the corner into the mudroom, clutching the crying infant tightly against her chest, she slammed straight into my path.
