Chapter 5 - A New Beginning**

Two weeks later, the physical bruises on Martha's face had faded into faint greenish-yellow shadows, and the harsh smell of vinegar was entirely gone, replaced by the comforting scents of vanilla candles and baby powder.
The social services department had officially stripped Marcus of any remaining parental rights or association with Leo, granting us emergency permanent guardianship while we finalized the adoption paperwork. Our home had never felt so quiet, yet so vibrantly alive.
On a bright Saturday afternoon, we set up a small playmat in the living room sunlight. Leo sat upright, surrounded by colorful plastic building blocks, laughing as he banged two rattles together with clumsy enthusiasm.
Martha sat cross-legged on the rug beside him, watching him with a radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. The trauma of that horrific day had tried to break our family, but it had ultimately forged an unbreakable shield around the people we loved.
"Look at him go," Martha laughed, gently catching Leo as he wobbled forward and tipped over onto his tummy, giggling uncontrollably.
I sat down on the edge of the sofa, leaning back with a deep sigh of profound relief. We had survived the nightmare, weathering a storm born of cruelty and greed, and emerged on the other side with our family intact, safe, and profoundly loved.
