Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound you could hear the distant hum of the ventilation system. Spencer Conway looked as though he had just seen a ghost. His eyes bulged in absolute horror as his brain tried and failed to process the mathematical impossibility standing before him: his supposedly pathetic, hidden-away wife walking arm-in-arm with Raymond Harrell—the ruthless billionaire patriarch who held ultimate veto power over every major corporate investment in the state.

"R-Raymond... Mr. Harrell," Spencer stammered, his polished corporate confidence evaporating in a fraction of a second. He stumbled forward, practically tripping over his own custom leather shoes, forcing a sickening, trembling smile onto his pale face. "I... I didn't realize you would be gracing us with your presence tonight. What an unexpected... honor."

My father didn't even look at him. Raymond Harrell’s gaze swept across the terrified crowd of executives before landing with laser-like precision on Spencer’s sweating face. The air around my father grew so cold and heavy that even Arthur Vance, the CEO of Apex Group, shrank back a step.

"Spencer Conway," my father said, his deep, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room without a microphone. "You have a fascinating definition of an honor."

Paisley Daley, realizing the catastrophic social shift happening in real-time, released Spencer’s arm and stepped back, her face flushed with panic. "Spencer... who is this? What’s going on?" she hissed under her breath, tugging at his sleeve.

Spencer ignored her entirely, his eyes wide with rising panic as he looked desperately toward me. "Phoebe... sweetheart... what is the meaning of this? Why didn't you tell me your father was... why didn't you say—"

"Quiet," my father snapped, the single word cracking like a whip across the ballroom.

Raymond stepped forward, releasing my arm and pulling a heavy manila folder from the briefcase carried by his chief attorney. He flipped it open, letting the documents catch the crystal chandelier light.

"For the past three years, my daughter chose to live a life of quiet humility," my father announced, his voice ringing with cold, righteous authority. "She married you because she believed in love, in patience, and in building something real. And how did you repay her, Mr. Conway? You treated her like dirt. You locked her away, mocked her appearance, drained her emotional energy, and paraded your vulgar little mistress through high society while openly bragging about your contempt for her."

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Several board members from Apex Group exchanged horrified, pale glances.

"That... that's a lie!" Spencer shrieked, his voice cracking hysterically. He pointed a shaking finger at me. "She’s unstable! She’s making things up! Mr. Harrell, you don't understand, we had a private agreement—"

"An agreement to torment my daughter?" my father interrupted smoothly. He held up a single sheet of paper from the folder. "Let's talk about agreements, Spencer. Specifically, the multi-million-dollar emergency credit line and infrastructure backing that Apex Group is currently relying on to fund your European expansion."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, his face turning ashen. "Mr. Harrell... surely you don't mean—"

"I mean exactly what this document states," Raymond declared coldly. "Harrell Capital holds eighty-five percent of the senior debt underlying Apex Group's current holdings. Furthermore, through a private trust held in my daughter’s legal name, she is the primary beneficial owner of the commercial real estate lease this very hotel sits on."

Spencer’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of a nearby catering table to keep from collapsing. "No... no, that's impossible. That trust belongs to an anonymous holding entity—"

"An entity named Phoebe Holdings LLC," my father finished calmly, looking down at Spencer as if he were inspecting a particularly disgusting insect crawling across his shoe. "Named after my daughter. And as of ten minutes ago, acting on her explicit instructions, my legal team has filed a motion for immediate default, calling in all outstanding debt and terminating every commercial lease agreement held by Spencer Conway and his corporate associates."

The ballroom erupted into sheer, chaotic pandemonium.
