Chapter 2 - The Hidden LLC and the Paper Trail**

That night, while Ryan slept soundly beside me, snoring softly without a single care in the world, I slipped out of bed and walked quietly down the hall to my home office. Opening my laptop, I bypassed our joint financial dashboard and accessed our bank’s deeper registry files. For three hours, I dug through months of statements, cross-referencing ledger lines that ordinary spouses would have easily overlooked. First, I found three large, unauthorized transfers from our home-equity line of credit directly into an unknown corporate account I didn't recognize. Then, I traced recurring monthly payments flowing out of that account to a mysterious entity called Northstar Consulting. I stared at the name, searching my memory. Northstar wasn't Ryan’s employer, nor was it a recognized vendor for his firm. Digging further into state corporate registries, I pulled up the public filings for Northstar Consulting. It was a limited liability company registered just four months earlier. The sole managing member listed on the formation documents wasn't a corporate partner. It was Ryan’s younger brother, Caleb—a twenty-four-year-old underachieving slacker who supposedly worked part-time at a sporting goods store. Ryan had been funneling our home equity, our joint savings, and my hard-earned corporate bonuses into a shell company controlled by his brother to fund Caleb’s lavish lifestyle and gambling debts, all while pretending we were financially strapped. By sunrise, I had systematically copied every single bank statement, canceled check, state filing, and transaction log into a heavily encrypted cloud folder. I exported the metadata, tracked the IP addresses used to authorize the transfers, and even found text message backups cached on our shared home computer confirming that Ryan and Caleb had planned this embezzlement scheme months in advance. They thought they had covered their tracks by hiding behind corporate anonymity laws. They didn't realize they were playing chess against a seasoned compliance officer who lived and breathed forensic investigations. I closed my laptop, the screen reflecting my cold, calculated smile in the dark room. The trap was fully set. All I needed to do was wait for the right moment to spring it.
