Chapter 2 - The Morning Audit**

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline at 7:00 AM, casting long, golden shafts of light across the hardwood floors of the Whitmore-Russo estate, but inside the master suite, the atmosphere felt like an impending arctic frost.
At 7:12 AM, Evelyn picked up her encrypted mobile phone and dialed Nora Bennett’s direct private line.
Nora answered on the second ring, her tone instantly alert and professional. “I saw the broadcast, Evelyn. Half the corporate board and every media outlet in the tri-state area have been trying to reach my office since midnight.”
“I need the entire trust structure and corporate holdings reviewed immediately,” Evelyn stated, her voice steady and unyielding.
A brief, heavy pause followed on the other end of the line. “Are you physically safe?”
“Yes.”
“Are you and the baby alright?”
“We are fine, Nora. But the marriage is over. I want every single asset, subsidiary, and voting share tied to Whitmore capital audited, frozen, and reallocated under the marital safeguard clause before the markets open this morning.”
Nora’s intake of breath was audible. “You’re invoking Section 14 of your father’s trust? Evelyn, that triggers a hostile corporate takeover of Russo Shipping and all associated subsidiaries. Dominic will lose operational control within hours.”
“Dominic should have thought about that before he decided to turn his personal life into a public spectacle,” Evelyn replied coldly. “Draw up the emergency injunctions, meet me at my midtown office at 9:00 AM sharp, and bring the litigation team. We are going to teach the Russos what happens when they bite the hand that fed them for two decades.”
Downstairs, Dominic woke up to an uncomfortably quiet house.
He rolled over in the king-size bed, expecting Evelyn to be there, but her side of the mattress was completely cold and undisturbed. Panic, sharp and metallic, flared in his chest. He threw off the duvet, rushed down the grand staircase, and found the kitchen completely deserted.
The leather folder he kept locked behind Jonathan Whitmore’s landscape painting was gone.
Dominic raced into his private study. The steel vault door stood wide open, its heavy locking bolts retracted. Empty folders, cross-referenced corporate registries, and blank legal notice templates were scattered across his mahogany desk like the aftermath of a hurricane.
His cell phone buzzed violently on the desk. He snatched it up, pressing accept.
It was Russell Russo, his older brother and the chief financial officer of Russo Holdings, screaming through the receiver. “Dominic! What the hell is happening?! All corporate accounts have been frozen by an emergency injunction filed by Bennett & Associates! The board just received formal notification that Whitmore Trust is executing a hostile asset seizure and stripping us of voting privileges!”
Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat, the blood draining instantly from his face. “Seizure? On what grounds? That’s impossible without board approval!”
“Fiduciary misconduct and public reputational damage clause under the pre-nuptial trust!” Russell yelled, panic cracking his voice. “Who authorized this?! Only Evelyn and her father’s legal team have the master cryptographic keys to invoke it!”
Before Dominic could stammer a reply, the heavy study doors swung open.
Evelyn stood on the threshold. She had changed into a sharp, tailored ivory designer pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a sophisticated chignon, looking every bit the ruthless heiress her father had raised her to be. She held a black leather folio under her arm, her expression entirely devoid of emotion.
Dominic lowered his phone slowly, staring at her as if she were a ghost. “Evie... what is this? Russell just said—you froze our corporate accounts? You initiated a takeover?”
“I initiated a reclamation,” Evelyn corrected smoothly, walking across the room to stand behind the executive desk that Dominic had treated as his personal kingdom for years. “You built your entire public persona and corporate empire on the foundation of my family’s money, Dominic. And last night, you proved to eleven million people—and to me—that you believe you are untouchable.”
“It was a mistake! A drunken lapse in judgment!” Dominic pleaded, taking a desperate step toward her. “You can't destroy everything we’ve built over a stupid television broadcast! We have a life together!”
“We had a life together,” Evelyn corrected, her voice cutting through the room like a surgical laser. “Now, you have a federal audit, a pending divorce petition, and zero legal authority over a single brick of Russo Holdings. My lawyers are already downstairs taking possession of the primary accounts.”
May you like
Dominic stared at her, the terrifying reality finally crashing down around him. The empire he thought he owned, the power he wielded so carelessly, and the wife he had taken for granted were all vanishing into thin air before breakfast.
