Chapter 4 - The Price of Power**

Two weeks after Eleanor walked out into the snow, the sun rose over a very different Manhattan skyline—one where my name was no longer whispered with reverence, but printed in bold, humiliating headlines across the front page of every major newspaper.

*MORETTI EMPIRE CRUMBLES: FEDERAL RAIDERS SEIZE ASSETS OF NOTORIOUS FINANCIAL SYNDICATE.*

Inside a secure, undisclosed safe house overlooking the Hudson River, protected by federal marshals and her own private security detail, Eleanor Moretti sat by a large bay window. She wore a comfortable cream-colored cashmere sweater, her hands resting gently over her heavily pregnant belly.

The stress of the ordeal had been immense, but her medical tests were clean, and her baby was strong, active, and growing safely away from the toxic shadow of his father.

There was a soft knock on the open door.

Her attorney and lifelong friend, Arthur Sterling, stepped into the room holding a thick leather portfolio. He offered her a warm, reassuring smile.

“How are you feeling, Eleanor?” Arthur asked gently, setting the portfolio down on the coffee table.

“I’m tired, Arthur,” she admitted, looking out at the glittering water. “But for the first time in seven years, I can breathe.”

“The U.S. Attorney’s office finalized the protective custody agreement this morning,” Arthur said, opening the folder to reveal crisp, official documents bearing federal seals. “Lucian’s legal team has stopped fighting the asset forfeiture. With the contents of Safe Deposit Box 412 and the corporate audit logs, the prosecution has an airtight RICO case against him. He’s looking at a minimum of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.”

Eleanor closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. A profound, lasting wave of grief washed over her—not for Lucian, but for the man she had once believed he could become, the man she had loved before ambition and cruelty poisoned his soul.

“And Celeste?” Eleanor asked quietly.

“Ms. Lane has cooperated with the federal task force in exchange for immunity regarding her minor administrative involvement,” Arthur replied smoothly. “She’s moved back to her parents’ home in Ohio, and she’s trying to figure out how to raise a child without the Moretti fortune to fund her lifestyle.”

Eleanor nodded slowly. She felt no malice toward Celeste. In truth, Celeste hadn't stolen Lucian from her; she had simply relieved her of a burden Eleanor had been carrying alone for far too long.

“Have the divorce and custody papers been filed under seal?” Eleanor asked, her maternal instincts immediately locking onto the most important detail.

“Yes. Sole physical and legal custody has been granted to you under a protected identity trust,” Arthur assured her. “Lucian will never know where you live, and he will never have any legal right to approach you or the child.”

Eleanor placed her hand over her stomach, feeling a sharp, reassuring kick from her son.

She had walked out of that mansion with nothing but a wool coat, her father’s scarf, and a small brass key. She had left behind the penthouses, the diamonds, the designer clothes, and the blood-soaked illusion of a billionaire marriage.

And in return, she had reclaimed her dignity, her safety, and her absolute freedom.
