Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The executive boardroom at Crestview Tower smelled of rich mahogany, fresh coffee, and impending doom. It was 10:00 AM on Thursday—the exact hour Gavin Pierce had circled in red ink on his calendar as the defining moment of his professional life.
Gavin walked through the double doors looking like a peacock strutting through a barnyard. He wore a bespoke charcoal-grey Italian suit, his hair meticulously styled, flashing a brilliant, arrogant smile at the senior partners seated around the massive oval table. Trailing closely behind him was Charlotte Gable, dressed in an expensive designer pencil skirt, holding a leather portfolio and looking as though she already owned half of Minneapolis.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Harrell, flanked by three senior managing directors. I sat quietly at the far end of the table, wearing a crisp black blazer, my hair pulled back, with a high-collared shirt completely concealing the bruises on my neck. Gavin didn't even bother looking in my direction; to him, I was already a ghost of his past, a discarded nuisance he had successfully swept under the rug.
"Mr. Pierce," Arthur Harrell began, his voice deep, measured, and dangerously calm. "Welcome. We have reviewed your final corporate disclosures, and we are prepared to discuss the final terms of the 3.2-billion-dollar capital injection."
Gavin puffed out his chest, stepping forward to take the speaker's podium with supreme confidence. "Thank you, Mr. Harrell. I want to assure this board that SwiftFreight is positioned for explosive, unprecedented growth. We have streamlined our internal operations, eliminated unnecessary liabilities—" he shot a brief, callous smirk down toward my end of the table "—and restructured our financial statements to reflect absolute fiscal integrity."
Charlotte nodded approvingly, leaning against the edge of the podium like a proud co-pilot.
"Is that so, Mr. Pierce?" my father asked smoothly, raising an eyebrow. "Absolute fiscal integrity? How fascinating. Because my forensic accounting team seems to have uncovered a slightly different narrative."
Gavin chuckled nervously, assuming it was a routine corporate joke or negotiation tactic. "Ah, well, initial audits can sometimes look complex, but I assure you, our books are pristine—"
"Your books are a criminal enterprise," my father interrupted, his tone instantly shifting from polite inquiry to glacial fury.
Before Gavin could process the sudden shift in atmosphere, Marcus Vance hit a remote button on the control console.
Instantly, the massive floor-to-ceiling projection screen behind the podium flickered to life. The audio recording of Mason bragging about hiding forty million dollars in offshore shell companies and manipulating financial statements began to echo loudly through the high-end boardroom speakers.
“For months now, we’ve been quietly shifting Gavin’s personal and corporate assets through international accounts... We also tied several high-risk loans directly to the marital assets... On paper, Gavin looks far poorer than he actually is...”
The color drained entirely from Gavin’s face. His mouth dropped open, his smug smile freezing into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. He spun around to stare at the screen, then whipped his head back toward the board members, his hands trembling violently.
"T-That's... that's a fake!" Gavin stammered, his voice cracking into a panicked squeak. "That's an AI-generated deepfake! It's a conspiracy by my disgruntled ex-wife—"
"It is not a fake, Mr. Pierce," Marcus interrupted coldly, pulling up federal wire transfer logs, shell company registry documents, and bank seizure warrants on the screen. "Those are authenticated audio files corroborated by sworn depositions from your own chief financial officer, Mason Vance, who was arrested by federal marshals forty-five minutes ago."
Charlotte gasped, dropping her leather portfolio onto the mahogany floor with a loud slap. "Arrested? That's impossible! Gavin, tell them it's a lie!"
Gavin couldn't speak. He stared at the screen as slide after slide revealed years of systematic tax evasion, fraudulent loan manipulations, and illicit asset concealment designed to cheat both creditors and divorce courts.
And then, my father pressed a final button.
The security camera footage from my bedroom taken two nights ago flashed onto the screen—showing Gavin towering over me with a belt in his hand, striking my shoulder while I stood defenseless, and hearing his crystal-clear voice sneer: "You sign today, or I’ll bury you in lawsuits... Your father’s nobody."
The boardroom went dead silent. The senior managing directors of Crestview Partners looked at Gavin with sheer disgust and revulsion.

My father stood up slowly from his chair, leaning over the table, his eyes locked onto my trembling, ruined ex-husband.
"My name is Arthur Harrell," my father said quietly, each word dropping like an anvil. "And the woman you beat with a belt, robbed of her dignity, and threw out onto the street with forty million dollars in fabricated debt... is my only daughter."
