Chapter 3 - The Cold War in the Boardroom**

While I spent the next two weeks recovering in a secure, private medical facility arranged by Dr. Reed and my personal legal counsel, the corporate world of Chicago was undergoing a seismic earthquake.
News of the stabbing had been ruthlessly suppressed by Vance Global’s high-priced PR machine, but corporate espionage leaks, emergency police reports, and financial filings cannot stay buried forever when a billionaire CEO is involved in a violent felony investigation. By the third week, the board of directors at Vance Global had received anonymous copies of the emergency room admission records, forensic blood-spatter reports from our living room, and depositions detailing Flynn’s violent assault.
The institutional investors were in open revolt.
One afternoon, as I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my temporary penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan, reviewing financial dissolution documents with my lead attorney, Julian Vance—no relation to Flynn, but a shark in the courtroom—my phone chimed with a breaking financial news alert.
*“VANCE GLOBAL SHARES PLUMMET 34% FOLLOWING EMERGENCY BOARD INVESTIGATION INTO CEO FLYNN VANCE.”*
Julian looked up from his tablet, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. “Your husband is bleeding out financially, Mabel. His primary institutional backers, Sterling & Cole, have officially called an emergency vote to oust him as CEO by Friday morning. Without the company, Flynn is just a violent criminal with rapidly depleting liquidity.”
“Good,” I said softly, tracing the rim of my teacup. “He thought he could erase me like a footnote in his ledger. It’s time he learns what happens when the ledger fights back.”
During our marriage, Flynn had taken all the credit for Vance Global’s explosive growth, but the truth was much more complicated. Before stepping down, I had personally structured the intellectual property holding agreements, negotiated their primary European logistics contracts, and quietly retained twenty-five percent non-voting equity in several key subsidiary shell companies under my maiden name. Flynn had been so blinded by his own arrogance—and his obsession with Selina—that he had never noticed the legal safety nets I built around myself.
Now, those safety nets were tightening around his throat like a garrote.
Later that evening, Flynn managed to bypass security and corner me in the private garden terrace of the rehabilitation center. He looked like a man unraveling at the seams. His bespoke suit was rumpled, his hair unkempt, and the arrogant, untouchable CEO aura was completely gone, replaced by frantic desperation.
“Mabel! You have to call off your lawyers!” Flynn hissed, grabbing the metal railing of the terrace as I turned to face him. “The board is holding a vote to strip me of my title tomorrow morning! They’re freezing my accounts, and Selina... the moment my money started drying up, she packed her bags and blocked my number!”
I let out a cold, dry laugh that had no humor in it.
“Did you really expect loyalty from a parasite, Flynn?” I asked, stepping closer to the glass partition. “You threw away your wife, your unborn children, and your entire moral compass for a woman who wouldn't even stay in the room when the bank account hit zero.”
“I was manipulated!” he cried, taking a step toward me. “She staged that scratch, Mabel! I swear to God, she threatened to ruin my reputation if I didn't defend her! I was blind—please, give me another chance. We can rebuild—”
“There is no we,” I interrupted, my voice dropping an octave into absolute finality. “Tomorrow morning, when the board strips you of your title, my lawyers will file the final divorce decree. You will walk away with a criminal record, zero corporate control, and every single cent you own tied up in civil restitution and asset freezes.”

Flynn stared at me, his face twisting into an ugly mask of rage and despair. But before he could lunge forward or make another frantic threat, two private security guards hired by Julian stepped out from the shadows, grabbing Flynn by the shoulders and dragging him away into the night.
