Chapter 8 - The Airport Terminal Ambush

The private aviation terminal at Port Sterling Regional Airport was slick, quiet, and reeked of expensive leather and jet fuel. It was midnight. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a private Gulfstream jet idled on the tarmac, its turbine engines whirring with a low, expensive vibration.

I sat in a plush armchair near the VIP lounge entrance, wearing a tailored charcoal trench coat and sunglasses, looking every bit the corporate executive I had become. Seated a few feet away, disguised in a wide-brimmed hat and reading a magazine she wasn't actually looking at, was Mom. We hadn't told Maya; this was strictly business.

The sliding automatic doors parted, and Richard Hart stepped into the terminal.

He hadn't changed much in five years. His hair was heavily dyed jet-black, his suit was loud and expensive-looking—likely bought on credit—and he carried himself with the bloated, aggressive swagger of a man who believed every room he entered owed him money. Behind him scurried Julian, looking exhausted, wearing a high-visibility orange vest over his hoodie from his day’s work on the municipal highway cleanup crew.

"I’m telling you, Dad, Clara is completely unhinged," Julian whined, tugging at his collar. "She’s got Reynolds wrapped around her finger. If we don't get out of the country tonight, she’s going to find a way to throw me back in jail!"

"Stop crying, Julian, you sound like a pathetic child," Richard snapped, his voice booming across the quiet terminal. "I built this family's name, and no daughter of mine is going to ruin my legacy over a petty accounting dispute. Where is the car I ordered?"

I stood up slowly from my chair, letting my trench coat fall open. I pulled off my sunglasses and stepped directly into their path.

"Looking for me, Dad?"

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. He blinked twice, his eyes darting up and down my professional attire, taking in the expensive leather portfolio in my hand and the quiet confidence radiating from my posture.

"Clara?" Richard sneered, a condescending smirk twisting his mouth. "Well, look at you playing dress-up. What are you, some kind of executive assistant now? Did you steal one of your boss's coats to look important?"

Julian cowered behind his father, his eyes wide with animalistic panic. "Dad, don't talk to her like that! You don't understand—she’s not an assistant! She’s the senior auditor! She’s the one who put me in handcuffs!"

Richard scoffed, waving a dismissive hand at Julian. "Quiet, boy. Your sister couldn't audit a lemonade stand without messing up the change."

"Actually, Richard, your son is entirely correct," a smooth, deep voice echoed from the shadows near the VIP exit.

Arthur Reynolds stepped forward, flanked by two towering private security guards in dark suits. Reynolds looked immaculate in a midnight-blue tuxedo, having just flown back from an international board meeting. His grey eyes locked onto Richard with the absolute, chilling composure of an apex predator.

Richard’s swagger instantly evaporated. He squinted at Reynolds, his face turning pale. "Arthur... Arthur Reynolds? What are you... what are you doing here?"

"I own this terminal, Mr. Hart," Reynolds replied smoothly, stopping two feet away from Richard. "And more importantly, I employ Miss Hart. When an individual flies into my city on a private charter to harass one of my executive officers and actively aid a convicted felon in violating federal probation... well, that crosses the line from a domestic dispute into corporate sabotage."

Richard swallowed hard, his voice suddenly losing all its booming bravado. "Now hold on just a minute, Mr. Reynolds! There’s been a misunderstanding! I’m just a father trying to help his son—"

"You abandoned your children five years ago, Richard," Mom’s calm, icy voice cut through the terminal as she stood up from her chair and walked over to join us.

Richard spun around, his jaw dropping. "Beatrice? What the hell are you doing here?"

"I’m here to watch the trash get taken out," Mom said, her eyes locked onto his with absolute, liberating contempt. "You walked away because you thought we were dead weight. You thought Julian was your only ticket to greatness. Look at him now, Richard. He’s a criminal, and you’re an accomplice."

Reynolds raised two fingers. Instantly, four local police officers—alerted by my security team thirty minutes prior—stepped out from the terminal corridors, their badges gleaming under the bright overhead lights.

"Federal probation violation for Julian Hart, and interstate conspiracy to commit corporate harassment for Richard Hart," Reynolds ordered calmly. "Take them away."

"No! You can't do this! I know senators!" Richard screamed as the officers grabbed his arms, slapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists while Julian began sobbing openly on the polished tile floor.

As they were dragged toward the exit doors, Julian looked back at me one last time, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of hatred and absolute defeat.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I just watched them go, feeling the last heavy ghost of our broken family finally vanish into the night.
