Chapter 4 - The Fall of an Empire**

Within forty-eight hours of Brandon’s disastrous outburst in the Lancaster Global boardroom, the legal dominoes fell with terrifying speed and precision.

The federal indictment handed down by the U.S. Attorney’s office was absolute and inescapable. Charged with attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny, Brandon Prescott was denied bail due to being an extreme flight risk. The presiding federal judge didn't even hesitate when Brandon’s high-priced defense attorney attempted to argue for house arrest.

As for Gretchen, her attempt to pin the entire conspiracy entirely on Brandon bought her a slightly reduced plea deal, but she still faced a mandatory minimum of ten years in federal penitentiary for accessory to attempted murder and corporate embezzlement.

Their high-society friends vanished into thin air like morning mist. The country club memberships were revoked, the luxury penthouse apartment in downtown Seattle was seized by federal marshals to satisfy emergency civil restitution orders filed by my legal team, and the fifty-million-dollar life insurance policy Brandon had so eagerly chased was permanently frozen, redirected instead into a trust fund bearing my son’s name.

I watched the news coverage from the serene, sun-drenched penthouse suite overlooking Puget Sound that Gabriel Lancaster had placed at my disposal during the transition.

The trauma of that freezing night on the Montana cliff still lingered faintly in my dreams, but every time I looked down at my son, Leo, sleeping peacefully against my chest with his tiny fists curled tightly into my sweater, the ghosts of the past dissolved into nothingness.

Gabriel walked into the sunroom carrying a tray of fresh fruit, herbal tea, and the final corporate restructuring documents transferring full ownership of Prescott Technologies—now rebranded as Aegis Holdings—directly into my sole executive control. He set the tray down on the marble coffee table, knelt beside my chair, and pressed a gentle, lingering kiss against the top of my head.

“How are my two favorite business partners doing this afternoon?” Gabriel smiled softly, looking up into my eyes with a depth of steady, unwavering devotion that still occasionally took my breath away.

“We’re doing remarkably well,” I smiled, resting my free hand gently against his cheek. “Though I think Leo is already reviewing the quarterly financial statements based on how hard he was kicking my arm earlier.”

Gabriel laughed, a warm, rich sound that chased away any remaining shadows in the room. He picked up the legal portfolio, flipping it open to the final signature page where my name was embossed in clean, bold gold lettering.

“The asset transfers are officially complete, Khloe,” Gabriel reported smoothly. “Aegis Holdings is fully under your control, and the remaining subsidiary assets have been successfully liquidated. You are officially one of the youngest self-made principal stakeholders in the Pacific Northwest tech sector.”

I looked out the expansive glass windows, watching the ferries drift across the deep blue waters of the sound. I felt no lingering bitterness, no anger, and no desire for revenge anymore. Justice had been served with mathematical precision, and my life was entirely my own once more.

“Do you know what the funniest part of all this is, Gabriel?” I asked quietly, a genuine smile touching my lips.

“What’s that?”

“Brandon spent years trying to convince the world that I was a fragile, dependent housewife incapable of surviving without him,” I murmured, looking down at my sleeping son. “He thought pushing me off a cliff was the easiest way to erase me. And yet, the very thing he designed to destroy me ended up stripping away his illusions, exposing his cowardice, and giving me the absolute freedom to build an empire of my own.”

Gabriel reached up, taking my face gently in his hands, his thumb brushing my cheekbone with infinite tenderness. “He never understood who you really were, Khloe. You were never his victim. You were the storm he never saw coming.”
