Chapter 1 - The Descent into Darkness and the Secret Bloodline**

The mountain wind howled like a starving animal, swallowing every sound—including my desperate, terrified scream. One moment, I was begging my husband to take me home, letting the bitter reality of his betrayal sink in too late. The next, Victor Hale’s cold, manicured hands struck my shoulders with calculated force, shoving my heavily pregnant body backward over the jagged edge of Blackthorn Cliff.

As I plunged into the frozen abyss, my hands clawed wildly at thin air, searching for a branch, a rock, anything to save us. There was nothing. Above me, framed by the swirling blizzard, Victor’s voice carried with a sickening casualness.

“Don’t worry, Elena,” he called down into the dark. “Your baby won’t suffer long.”

Then the world exploded into blinding white.

I slammed hard onto a narrow, snow-dusted ledge halfway down the vertical drop. Pain ripped through my ribs, my fractured right wrist, and my swollen, eight-month-pregnant stomach. Warm blood filled my mouth, contrasting sharply with the biting, sub-zero air that pierced my clothing. Looking up, I could barely make out Victor’s silhouette standing at the summit.

Serena, his designer-clad mistress who had spent months living under our roof under the guise of an interior decorator, stood beside him.

“Is she dead?” Serena’s voice drifted down, trembling with a mix of excitement and lingering dread.

Victor let out a cold, guttural laugh. “For fifty million dollars? She better be.”

Without looking back, they turned and walked away, leaving me to die alone in the frozen wilderness.

For nearly two hours, I lay trapped on that icy slab, consciousness slipping away like melting snow. I kept both hands locked over my lower belly, fiercely protecting my unborn son against the numbing cold as I whispered prayers into the darkness. Please... stay with me. Please.

Just as my vision blurred and the final threads of hope began to snap, a powerful, piercing searchlight swept across the cliffside. The rhythmic thumping of heavy rotor blades echoed through the canyon. A rescue helicopter hovered overhead, dropping a winch line into the storm.

Yet, the man who descended toward me was not dressed in standard rescue gear. He wore a tailored black cashmere coat despite the howling blizzard, his silver hair swept back by the gale, his sharp steel-gray eyes locked onto me with fierce determination.

As he knelt beside me, I recognized him instantly from an old, hidden photograph my late mother had kept tucked away in her personal lockbox.

Adrian Cross.

CEO of Cross Atlantic Insurance Group. The primary underwriter of the massive life insurance policy Victor had secretly forced me to sign.

And, according to my mother’s dying confession... my biological father.

The instant Adrian reached my side, his face broke with profound shock and suppressed rage. “Elena?” he breathed, his voice cracking.

I tried to speak, but only dark blood escaped my lips. I weakly pressed my hand against my stomach, trying to signal to him. He gently covered my hand with his own leather-gloved fingers, his eyes blazing with an unholy fire.

“You are not dying here, daughter. I swear it to you.”

At Cross Atlantic’s private medical facility, the surgical teams worked through the night. The diagnosis was staggering: broken ribs, a fractured wrist, severe facial trauma, and profound hypothermia. Every second ticked past like an eternity while the obstetric monitors searched frantically for my baby’s heartbeat.

Then... a faint, steady rhythm filled the sterile room.

Weak. Fragile. But defiantly alive.

As pain blurred my consciousness, Adrian sat steadfastly by my bed, holding my uninjured hand. His voice was steady, but ice-cold.

“Victor has already filed the fraudulent insurance claim,” Adrian informed me, his jaw clenching. “He reported to local investigators that you wandered into the storm during a psychotic break, slipped off the cliff, and that both you and the unborn child died from exposure.”

My throat was too ravaged by frost to speak, but my mind sharpened like a razor blade.

“He also requested that the fifty-million-dollar payout be expedited and processed immediately,” Adrian concluded grimly.

That was all it took. Victor thought we were dead. He thought his masterclass in murder was complete. He believed fifty million dollars was already sitting in his offshore accounts, waiting for him and Serena to celebrate.

I slowly raised a trembling, bruised hand to touch my cheek.

May you like

Then... in the quiet darkness of the hospital room... I smiled.
