Chapter 5 - A New Horizon

Six months later, the California sun was warm, bright, and entirely unbothered by the chilly ghosts of Boston.

I stood on the private terrace of my new headquarters in downtown San Francisco, looking out over the glittering expanse of the bay. The wind caught the hem of my tailored white blazer as I reviewed the quarterly growth reports for Vance & Stanhope Holdings—a newly rebranded global enterprise where I held controlling shares, independent board authority, and absolute autonomy.

My past life felt like a movie I had watched a lifetime ago—a tragic, melodramatic fiction that had nothing to do with the woman I was today.

Charles was currently facing trial in a federal courtroom in Massachusetts, abandoned by his high-society friends, his mother, and his former mistress, drowning in legal fees and facing up to fifteen years for corporate wire fraud and embezzlement. Phoebe was raising twins in a modest suburban duplex in Connecticut, supported by modest child support payments while fighting a bitter custody battle against Julian Vance's high-powered legal team.

And Cordelia? She had quietly retired from public life, spending her remaining days volunteering at a local women’s shelter in downtown Boston—trying, in her own late and clumsy way, to pay back some of the karma she had accumulated over a lifetime of pride.

A soft knock echoed at the terrace glass door.

I turned to see my executive assistant stepping out onto the patio, holding a sleek silver tablet.

“Hannah, the venture capital delegation from Tokyo has just arrived in the lobby. They’re ready for the strategic partnership presentation in Conference Room A.”

I smiled, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of peace settle into my bones. I looked down at my hand—at the clean, elegant diamond ring I had bought for myself with my own dividends, shining brilliantly in the morning light.

“Tell them I’ll be right down,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and completely free of shadows.

I was no longer running from a shadow. I was the light.
