Chapter 2 - The Second Dozen Transactions**

The subterranean vault of the Fifth Avenue store housed their bespoke luggage collection—heavy-duty German polycarbonate trunks, handcrafted Parisian leather weekender bags, and monogrammed garment carriers designed for private jet travel.
“Three matching sets of the titanium-frame trunk series,” I instructed calmly, pointing to the sleek, indestructible cases displayed under museum-grade spotlighting. “And two full-grain leather cabin bags.”
Madame Laurent didn't bat an eye. She simply tapped her tablet, swiped the black card through the secure terminal, and let the authorization protocol do its work.
*Charge twelve: $6,500.*
*Charge thirteen: $4,200.*
*Charge fourteen: $12,800.*
As the receipts printed out in a long, continuous white ribbon, I watched the digital timestamp on my watch change from 9:15 PM to 9:35 PM. Every single swipe of Alexander’s card was a physical blow to his untouchable financial fortress, but more than that, it was a declaration of war. For two years, Alexander had treated me like a decorative fixture in his penthouse, an invisible entity meant to manage his household, entertain his business associates, and never demand emotional reciprocity. He thought his wealth was a cage that kept me trapped. He didn't realize that wealth could also be used as a battering ram to break the door down.
My phone vibrated violently against the marble tabletop. It was Alexander again, but this time, it wasn't a text. It was a direct voice call. I slid my thumb across the screen and hit accept, bringing the phone slowly to my ear.
“Erin! What in God’s name do you think you’re doing?!” Alexander’s voice exploded through the speaker, choked with absolute fury and disbelief. The sophisticated veneer he wore so comfortably in public had completely cracked, leaving behind the shrill panic of a man losing control. “My fraud department has pinged fourteen consecutive luxury transactions in less than an hour! Do you have any idea how ridiculous this looks? Put the card down right now!”
I kept my voice unnervingly quiet, letting the contrast between his hysteria and my calm pierce straight through his ego.
“You told me I could buy whatever I wanted, Alexander,” I replied smoothly, watching Madame Laurent carefully tag the leather luggage sets with my name. “Did you lie? Is the unlimited black card actually subject to a secret budget?”
“Don’t play games with me, Erin!” he roared over the background clatter of high-end silverware and ambient jazz music leaking from whatever overpriced restaurant he was sitting in with Sophia. “You’ve spent over sixty thousand dollars in forty minutes! You are deliberately trying to humiliate me!”
“Humiliate you?” I let out a soft, dry laugh that sounded foreign even to my own ears. “Alexander, you are currently sitting across from your mistress on our second wedding anniversary, having abandoned your wife with a cold dinner and a credit card meant to buy my silence. You humiliated yourself long before I stepped foot inside this store.”
A heavy, suffocating silence hung over the phone line for three full seconds. When Alexander spoke again, his voice dropped into a dangerous, low hiss.
“You listen to me very carefully,” he threatened, every syllable dripping with condescension. “You will walk out of that store right now, go back to the penthouse, and wait for me to come home. If you make one more charge on that card, I will freeze your access permanently, cut off your monthly allowance, and ensure you leave our marriage with absolutely nothing. Do you understand me?”
The threat was supposed to terrify me. It was the ultimate trump card of a man who believed money was the source of all power.
“Keep your allowance, Alexander,” I whispered into the phone. “And as for the penthouse? You won’t have to worry about me being there when you get back.”

Before he could demand an explanation, I tapped the red end-call button, powered the phone completely off, and dropped it into my new leather handbag.
