Chapter 3 - The Midnight Consultation**

By 2:00 AM, I couldn’t lie still in bed anymore. The air in the room felt thick with my own failures. I gently untangled myself from Savannah, tucked the duvet around her shoulders, and slipped quietly out of the bedroom.

I walked into my home office, closed the heavy glass door, and sat at my mahogany desk. I plugged Savannah’s phone into my laptop, transferring the entire 148-item archive into an encrypted, secure external drive. Then, without hesitation, I dialed a number I had saved in my contacts under Marcus Vance - Senior Partner, Corporate & Civil Litigation.

Marcus was not just a top-tier attorney in San Diego; he was a ruthless legal bulldog who had represented Savannah’s family trust years ago.

The phone rang twice before a deep, gravelly voice answered, sounding completely alert despite the ungodly hour.

“Christopher? It’s two in the morning. This better be an absolute emergency,” Marcus said, his tone professional and sharp.

“It is,” I replied, my voice chillingly steady. “Marcus, I need to initiate emergency protective orders, file immediate criminal assault and elder-endangerment charges, and completely sever any legal ties my mother has to our lives, our property, and our family trust.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. Marcus knew my voice well enough to hear the tectonic shift that had just occurred in my life.

“Tell me what happened,” Marcus commanded softly.

For the next twenty minutes, I laid it all out. I told him about walking in on Bernice pulling my pregnant wife’s hair. I told him about the split lip, the hidden notes, the audio recordings, and the video evidence of my mother threatening our unborn child. I didn't spare myself either; I confessed my own blind stupidity, letting him know I had just kicked her out of the apartment hours earlier.

When I finished, the silence on the line was heavy and oppressive.

“Christopher,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “If half of what you’re telling me is backed by digital evidence, your mother isn’t just looking at a restraining order. She’s looking at multiple felony counts of domestic abuse, physical battery against a vulnerable pregnant adult, and terroristic threats. With video proof, the district attorney won't even hesitate.”

“She threatened my son, Marcus,” I said, my grip on the desk tightening until my knuckles turned white. “I want her prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law. I want a permanent, ironclad restraining order that keeps her at least five hundred miles away from my wife, my child, and this property. And legally, I want her barred from ever stepping foot in San Diego County again.”

“Consider it already in motion,” Marcus replied briskly. “I’ll have my private investigator pull her current location—she likely went to a nearby hotel or called one of her cronies—and we’ll have the county sheriff serve her with the emergency protective orders by sunrise. Furthermore, since you mentioned the penthouse is heavily backed by Savannah’s pre-marital equity, let’s make sure there’s an explicit financial injunction filed to freeze any assets she might try to claim as a dependent family member.”

“Do whatever it takes,” I instructed. “Cost is no object.”

“Meet me at my office at 8:00 AM sharp, Christopher. Bring the original encrypted drive with all the files. We’re going to build a cage around your family that your mother will never, ever escape from.”

The call disconnected. I sat back in my leather chair, staring out the massive floor-to-ceiling windows at the glittering skyline of San Diego under the moonlight. The monster who had terrorized my home was out there, sleeping soundly, completely unaware that the trap had already been sprung.
