Chapter 4 - The Vulture and the Empire**

Three days later, the fallout of Ethan Mercer’s corporate negligence began hitting Wall Street like a seismic tremor.

While I rested safely under the watchful care of St. Catherine’s top-tier medical specialists, Adrian Vale’s corporate legal team had quietly executed a series of devastating financial maneuvers that brought Mercer Holdings to its knees.

It turned out that during my five years as Ethan’s wife, I hadn't just been a homemaker; I had secretly audited, reviewed, and structured nearly half of Ethan’s foundational corporate debt portfolios while covering up the structural vulnerabilities in his balance sheets. When Ethan kicked me out, he also severed the only thing keeping his over-leveraged tech empire solvent.

Adrian had simply walked through the door I had unknowingly left unlocked.

At 2:00 PM on Thursday, Ethan burst into my private hospital room without knocking. He looked completely unhinged. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and his eyes were bloodshot from days of panic. Behind him stood two frantic corporate board members holding emergency financial portfolios.

“You did this!” Ethan screamed, lunging toward my bed before Adrian’s security guards casually stepped into his path, pinning his arms back with absolute professional ease. “You gave Vale our debt schedules! You handed him our proprietary logistics algorithms!”

I calmly set aside the book I was reading and looked at my estranged husband with utter disdain.

“I didn't give Adrian anything, Ethan,” I replied evenly. “You spent five years convincing yourself that you were a self-made titan while I quietly kept your house of cards from collapsing. When you threw me out into the rain with twenty-four hours notice, you didn't just throw out a wife—you threw out the foundation of your entire company.”

“Mrs. Mercer—Ms. Bennett is entirely correct,” one of the board members stammered, stepping forward and looking terrified. “Ethan, Vale Capital has just executed a hostile takeover of our primary overseas supply chain. They’ve bought out our largest institutional creditors. Unless you can convince Claire to retract her financial injunctions, Mercer Holdings will declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy by Friday morning.”

Ethan’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked like a man standing on the edge of a sheer cliff, watching the ground beneath his feet crumble into the ocean.

Slowly, agonizingly, the arrogant, untouchable billionaire who had treated my heartbreak like paperwork let out a broken, wheezing breath. He looked at the security guards holding his arms, then shifted his terrified gaze back to me.

With a sickening, pathetic scrape of fabric against the linoleum floor, Ethan Mercer did something I never, in my wildest dreams, thought I would live to see.

He dropped to his knees.
