Chapter 4 - The Smoking Gun**

The trap snapped shut on a quiet Saturday morning when I found Garrett’s smartphone resting face up on the nightstand while he was in the shower. It didn't have a password—he was too arrogant to think I would ever dare touch his property.
I wasn't planning on snooping. I really wasn't. But as I walked past to grab my glasses, the screen lit up with a push notification from Lorraine:
*“So you're really going to do what we agreed on Friday? Teach her a lesson?”*
My fingers hovered over the screen, and before I could stop myself, I tapped open the encrypted messaging app. The conversation history made my stomach violently heave.
Lorraine had written: “Your wife needs to learn who's in charge. On her birthday, we'll come early with Tabitha and the kids. Make her get up, prepare breakfast, and clean the whole house. If she refuses, stand your ground and show her she has no power.”
Garrett had replied: “What if she gets angry and kicks us out?”
Lorraine’s response was chilling: “You're a man, Garrett. Or are you going to let a woman control you in your own house? Assert yourself.”
And Garrett’s final text back to his mother burned into my retinas: “Okay, Mom. I'll wake her at five with a bucket of ice water. That'll break her spirit.”
I placed the phone back down on the exact spot where I had found it, my hands completely steady. I walked over to my cherrywood desk, opened my physical planner, and pulled out my red pen.
Monday: Meet with lawyer Arthur Sterling.
Tuesday: Change all apartment locks and security codes.
Wednesday: Finalize property injunctions and financial clawback forensic audits.
Thursday: Pack Garrett’s clothes into a suitcase and leave it by the service elevator.
Friday: Execute final legal service.
Beneath the weekly schedule, I wrote one final sentence in bold ink: “They want to test me as a wife in my own home on my birthday. They're about to discover something none of them is prepared to hear.”

For the first time in my life, I felt a wave of absolute, tranquil peace. Some bonds cannot be saved. Some monsters cannot be reasoned with. They had chosen war; I was going to deliver total annihilation.
