Chapter 3 - Turbulence at Thirty Thousand Feet

The Boeing 737 climbed steadily through the heavy cloud layer, breaking through into the blinding, uninterrupted glare of the high-altitude sun. Inside the cabin, the initial shock had given way to a suffocating, unbearable tension. No one spoke. Chloe had pulled her tray table down and was pretending to read a glossy fashion magazine, though her eyes hadn't moved past the same paragraph of a perfume advertisement for ten straight minutes. Julian sat rigidly between them, staring straight ahead like a condemned man waiting for the drop, his hands clamped tightly around the armrests as if he were trying to anchor himself to a sinking ship.

Elena turned her head slowly, breaking the silence with a voice so calm it cut through the hum of the jet engines like a scalpel.

"You left your tablet open on the kitchen island, Julian," she said casually, as if they were discussing the evening grocery list.

Julian flinched violently, his head snapping toward her. "Elena... please. Let’s... let’s not do this here. Let’s wait until we land. We can talk. I can explain everything—"

"There’s nothing to explain that hasn't already been documented, indexed, and filed, Julian," she interrupted smoothly, not raising her voice by a single decibel. "I know about the apartment in the South End. I know about the corporate credit card you’ve been using to pay for Chloe’s leasing fees and boutique shopping sprees. And I certainly know that your 'client meetings' in Chicago were nothing more than a convenient cover story for a romantic getaway to the Loews Miami Beach Hotel."

Chloe dropped her magazine. The pages fluttered against her knees before sliding onto the carpeted floor. She whipped her head around to look at Julian, her face contorted in sudden, sharp betrayal. "You said you were separated! You told me your wife was completely out of the picture, that you were just living in the same house for the sake of your daughter!"

"Chloe, shut up, don't listen to her—" Julian stammered, his face flushing a deep, mottled crimson as several passengers in nearby rows turned their heads at the sudden outburst.

"She’s lying to you, Chloe, just like she’s been lying to me," Elena interjected, her tone dripping with calm authority. She reached into her leather folder and pulled out a single, pristine sheet of heavy cardstock, sliding it effortlessly across the shared armrest and onto Chloe’s tray table. "Here is a copy of our marriage certificate, current through today. And right beneath it is a certified appraisal of our primary residence, which is solely in my name thanks to a prenuptial agreement your charming boyfriend conveniently forgot to mention when he was wooing you at that marketing firm."

Chloe stared down at the documents, her mouth slightly open. The illusion of the wealthy, successful executive sweeping her off her feet to a glittering future vanished in the harsh fluorescent light of the airplane cabin. She saw the trap for what it was—she wasn't the star of a grand romance; she was just a convenient accessory for a desperate man living a double life he could no longer afford to maintain.

"You lied to me," Chloe whispered, her voice trembling with humiliation as she grabbed her purse from beneath the seat in front of her. She glared at Julian with pure venom. "You absolute piece of trash."

May you like

Julian tried to reach out and grab her wrist, but Chloe jerked her arm away, standing up abruptly and pushing past his knees with enough force to nearly knock him into the aisle. She marched unceremoniously toward the back of the aircraft, disappearing into the galley near the rear lavatories, leaving Julian stranded between his furious, betrayed wife and the wreckage of his crumbling existence.

The cabin grew utterly still once more, save for the steady, unyielding roar of the engines carrying them further and further away from the lives they had left behind.
