Chapter 2 - The Trap Within the Syndicate**

Dante Bellarosa was fifty-one years old, possessing piercing dark eyes and a quiet, terrifying aura that commanded absolute obedience without ever needing to raise his voice. For half his life, men whispered titles about him that never appeared on his business cards. These days, he owned upscale restaurants, major construction firms, commercial warehouses, and several historic apartment buildings across Brooklyn, while running a massive philanthropic foundation as a public shield. But the underworld never truly released its grip on men like Dante.

By noon that same day, Dante’s private investigators had uncovered the grim truth: Elena hadn’t just been assaulted in a fit of domestic rage. She had been methodically set up.

Surveillance footage recovered from the private service entrance of the Moretti residential tower showed Vivien Rinaldi—Matteo’s ice-cold chief financial officer and rumored mistress—entering through the underground loading dock at 4:41 p.m. the afternoon before the attack. Vivien left thirty-eight minutes later. When she arrived, she carried a bulky leather briefcase under her wool coat; when she walked out, her hands were empty.

At two o’clock, Dante sat across from his longtime associate, Paul DeLuca, in the private rear dining room of a closed Brooklyn steakhouse. Paul slid a manila folder and several crisp photographs across the mahogany table.

“Vivien used her executive override code,” Paul explained, pointing to the time stamps. “She went straight into the penthouse while Elena was out running errands. Building logs confirm she accessed Elena’s private study.”

“And Matteo returned home at what time?” Dante asked, his eyes narrowing.

“Six forty-four p.m.”

Dante examined the surveillance stills. “What did Vivien plant inside the study?”

“We pulled the security logs from the building’s central printer terminal,” Paul answered, sliding another document forward. “Financial ledgers. The exact same type of incriminating offshore tax evasion records Elena had spent the last eighteen months secretly compiling against her husband.”

Dante leaned back slowly in his leather chair, a cold realization dawning on him. “Vivien didn’t just plant evidence. She wanted Matteo to find those files right where Elena kept her research.”

“Exactly,” Paul nodded. “They staged it so Matteo would believe Elena was leaking his syndicate’s financial secrets to federal prosecutors. They manipulated his paranoia to make him strike her.”

Dante’s jaw tightened until the muscles flexed visibly. He had known Matteo’s father, a brutal but honorable man who would have put a bullet through Matteo’s skull for laying a hand on an expectant mother. Matteo, however, was a hollow, ambitious sociopath willing to sacrifice his own wife and unborn child to protect his illicit empire and eliminate anyone threatening his bottom line.

“Where is Vivien right now?” Dante asked quietly.

“Downtown at the Moretti corporate headquarters, attending an emergency board meeting with Matteo,” Paul replied.

Dante stood up, adjusting his dark wool overcoat. “Let’s go pay the board a visit. It’s time they learned what happens when you let wolves run the nursery.”
