Chapter 5 - A New Sunrise on the South Road

Three weeks later, the crisp autumn air of Hartwell County felt entirely different.
The Voss empire was completely gone. Warren Voss and his disgraced son were facing multi-count federal indictments for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and racketeering, their assets auctioned off to pay back the communities they had exploited for decades. The downtown district was being reorganized under a community trust, returning properties back to the local families who actually worked for them.
Back on the south road, the sun was rising over the ridge, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and gold.
I stood on my front porch, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the golden light hit the fields.
The screen door creaked open behind me.
Claire stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a soft flannel blanket. The bruises on her face had begun to fade into faint shades of yellow and green, and her ribs were healing nicely under Dr. Ellis’s watchful care. She walked up beside me, leaning her head gently against my shoulder.
“How are you feeling today, sweetheart?” I asked softly, wrapping an arm around her.
“I’m feeling stronger every day, Daddy,” she smiled, looking out over the sprawling green pastures. “It still feels like a dream. Like none of it was real.”
“It’s real,” I said, kissing the top of her head. “And nobody will ever hurt you again. You have my word.”
She looked up at me with bright, clear eyes, a genuine smile touching her lips. “You know, for twenty years, everyone around here thought you were just a quiet dirt farmer who kept to himself.”
I let out a low, rumbling chuckle, taking a sip of my coffee.
“Let them think whatever they want,” I said, looking down the long dirt road leading away from our farm. “As long as they know one thing.”
May you like
“What’s that?” Claire asked.
“Never underestimate a father who loves his daughter.”
