Chapter 5 - A Father's Return And The Town's Apology

Three days later, the morning sun broke warmly over the hospital courtyard. In Room 412, Ashley sat propped up against a pile of pillows, wearing a brand-new pink pajama set gifted by the nurses. Her cheeks had regained their healthy glow, and she was happily coloring in a Disney book using markers.
The door clicked open softly.
Ashley looked up, her markers slipping from her fingers and clattering onto the hospital tray.
Standing in the doorway, leaning slightly on a metal cane and supported by a nurse, was Andrew. His head was wrapped in a light bandage, and dark bruises still stained his jaw, but his eyes were bright and filled with overwhelming tears as he looked at his little girl.
"Daddy!" Ashley cried out, scrambling across the bed and throwing her arms around his neck as he knelt down to catch her.
Andrew buried his face in her hair, holding her so tightly as if afraid she might vanish into thin air. "I'm so sorry I took so long, sweetheart," he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I tried so hard to drive back to you through the storm."
"I knew you would," Ashley sobbed happily into his shoulder, holding Buddy in her other hand. "We waited for you."
Outside in the hallway, Officer Natalie and Detective Miller watched the reunion with tears in their eyes.
When Andrew eventually discharged from the hospital a week later, stepping out into the front yard of their rental house, he was met by a sight he never expected. The entire neighborhood had gathered by the front fence. There were no cameras, no angry shouts, and no gossip—only quiet, respectful warmth.
Mrs. Gable stepped forward holding a freshly baked casserole, her eyes downcast with genuine remorse. "Andrew," she said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "We were wrong. Every single one of us judged you without knowing the truth. We are so, so sorry for what you and Ashley went through. If you ever need anything—anything at all—this neighborhood is here for you."

Andrew looked at the crowd, then down at Ashley, who smiled up at him while holding his hand tightly. The dark days of isolation and cruel judgment were finally behind them.
"Thank you," Andrew said quietly, nodding to his neighbors as he unlocked the front door and welcomed his daughter back home where they both belonged.
