Chapter 2 - The Audio That Shook the Foundation

The kitchen audio system wasn't even necessary; my phone’s internal speakers were turned all the way up, their crisp digital output echoing off the hard tile surfaces and ringing clearly through the open archway into the dining room where the entire family stood frozen.

Out of the tiny speaker came a voice that every single person in this house recognized instantly.

It was Evelyn’s voice. But she wasn't speaking with the haughty, commanding tone she used to bully her household. She sounded soft, breathless, and intensely conspiratorial.

*“...I don't care what Arthur says, we have to liquidate the secondary portfolio before my husband audits the accounts next month,”* the recorded Evelyn whispered smoothly. “If Richard finds out about the offshore transfer to your account, we’re both finished. Just meet me at the usual motel on Route 9 after the charity gala. Wear the jacket I liked. We’ll finalize the divorce paperwork from Arthur then, my sweet boy...”

A second male voice—smooth, youthful, and entirely unfamiliar to anyone in the Sterling family—responded clearly through the recording: “Relax, gorgeous. Your old man will never suspect a thing as long as you keep blaming the daughter-in-law for everything. She’s the perfect scapegoat...”

The audio looped back to the beginning, but I hit pause before it could repeat.

Silence descended upon the Sterling estate. It wasn't just quiet; it was a heavy, suffocating vacuum where even breathing felt like a loud disruption.

For three agonizing seconds, nobody moved. Uncle Richard’s face went from pale to a dangerous, mottled crimson as the horrifying implication of the words “your old man” and “divorce paperwork from Arthur” sank deep into his consciousness. Arthur Sterling, Evelyn’s wealthy, elderly husband who was currently resting upstairs with a heart condition, was Richard’s brother.

Evelyn stood paralyzed in the center of the kitchen, her mouth opening and closing silently like a fish stranded on a dock. All the color had drained completely from her cheeks, leaving her powdered face looking like a cracked porcelain doll.

“Evelyn...” Uncle Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed rage. “Whose voice was that? Who the hell is Arthur supposed to be divorcing?”

“It—it’s fake!” Evelyn shrieked suddenly, shedding her frozen panic and transforming into a whirling dervish of absolute hysteria. She lunged across the kitchen counter toward me like a wildcat, claws extended to tear the phone from my hand. “It’s artificial intelligence! She synthesized my voice! She’s trying to destroy this family!”

Gasps exploded across the room. Several aunts stepped back in horror, clutching their pearls.

Evelyn’s nails came within inches of my face when a heavy, muscular arm shot out from the side, blocking her path with the force of a hydraulic press.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was Cousin Marcus, a collegiate rugby coach who usually stayed completely out of family politics. His massive frame blocked Evelyn entirely, his expression like cold granite.

“Back up, Aunt Evelyn,” Marcus warned, his voice low and dangerous. “Let her speak.”

Evelyn screamed, flailing against Marcus’s arm. “You fools! Are you really going to believe an interloper over me? Thirty years of marriage! Thirty years building this family!”

“Then explain the five hundred dollars missing from the study desk, Evelyn,” I said smoothly, stepping around Marcus to stand in the center of the room. “Which, by the way, I didn't steal. But I did find it tucked inside your Louis Vuitton travel bag yesterday afternoon right beside a hotel booking confirmation for Route 9 under the name ‘Mrs. Evelyn Vance’.”

Uncle Richard stepped forward, his eyes boring into his sister-in-law with an intensity that could melt steel. “Vance? That’s young Tyler Vance’s last name. The twenty-four-year-old personal trainer you hired for the country club last summer?”

Evelyn froze. The last vestige of her armor shattered into dust.

She realized in that terrifying heartbeat that her entire empire of lies, manipulation, and social dominance had completely collapsed in less than sixty seconds.

She opened her mouth to scream another denial, but no sound came out.
