Chapter 4 - The Trap Springs Shut**

The atmosphere inside Courtroom 3B was tense and formal. Presiding over the docket was Judge Robert Sterling, a no-nonsense jurist known for his sharp intellect and zero tolerance for perjury or marital manipulation.

Luca’s lead attorney, a slick corporate litigator named Thomas Vance—no relation to Marcus—immediately stood up and addressed the bench.

“Your Honor,” Thomas Vance began smoothly, adjusting his glasses. “We are here today to resolve the final disposition of the marital estate, specifically the residential property located on Elm Street, which rightfully belongs to our client, Mr. Luca Moretti, under constructive marital contribution laws. Furthermore, we are requesting full custody review, given Mrs. Moretti’s unstable history and alleged domestic accidents.”

Judge Sterling peered over his reading glasses, his stern gaze landing squarely on me.

“Mrs. Moretti,” the judge said formally. “You are representing yourself alongside co-counsel Mr. Marcus Vance. What is your response to the petitioner’s claims regarding the property and custody?”

I slowly stood up from the defense table, holding little Maya securely in one arm, while Marcus stepped forward to place the biometric briefcase on the wooden podium.

“Your Honor,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady across the silent courtroom. “We contest every single claim made by the petitioner. Furthermore, we maintain that Mr. Moretti has no legal or moral right to my late father’s property, nor any parental rights to my daughter, given that he attempted to murder both of us eight months ago.”

A loud gasp erupted from the gallery.

Luca slammed his hands down on the table and stood up furiously. “That is a psychotic lie! Your Honor, she’s delusional! She slipped on the kitchen floor while pregnant and now she’s spinning a vindictive fairy tale to steal my share of the house!”

Wendy stood up beside him, pointing an accusing finger at me. “She’s unstable! She threw herself against the stove for attention!”

“Mr. Moretti! Mrs. Moretti senior! Sit down and shut your mouths or I will have you both dragged out in handcuffs for contempt!” Judge Sterling thundered, banging his gavel with explosive force.

The courtroom fell instantly silent.

Judge Sterling turned his piercing eyes back toward Marcus and me. “Counselor Vance, those are extraordinarily grave criminal allegations of attempted homicide. Unless you have hard, forensic, indisputable evidence to back up a charge of attempted murder during a domestic dispute, I am inclined to dismiss these criminal claims and proceed strictly with asset division.”

Marcus didn't flinch. A slow, confident smile touched the corners of his weathered mouth.

“Your Honor,” Marcus said calmly, pressing his thumb against the biometric scanner on the heavy aluminum briefcase. Click. The lid popped open. “We don’t just have allegations. We brought the kitchen with us.”

Marcus reached inside and pulled out a sleek, government-certified forensic tablet, connecting it directly to the courtroom’s master digital evidence display system.

“With the court's permission,” Marcus continued, “we would like to exhibit Exhibit A: unedited, high-definition cloud surveillance footage recovered from the smart security camera located inside the Moretti residence kitchen on the exact date and time in question. A camera that Mr. Moretti frantically smashed to pieces moments after realizing it had recorded his crime.”

Luca’s face instantly lost all color. The smug, arrogant expression vanished, replaced by the wide-eyed, absolute terror of a cornered animal.

“No,” Luca choked out, stumbling backward against his chair. “That... that’s impossible. I destroyed the lens!”

“You destroyed the hardware, Luca,” I whispered loudly enough for the whole room to hear. “You forgot about the cloud.”

Judge Sterling nodded grimly. “Play the footage.”

The massive courtroom screen flickered to life.

The crystal-clear video began playing for everyone in the room to see. The audio filled the courtroom with chilling clarity: Luca’s demand to sign the deed, my refusal, his violent shove sending me straight into the boiling stockpot, my agonizing scream, the severe burns on my arm, Wendy’s cold, calm commentary (*“Maybe now she’ll learn who this house belongs to”*), and finally, Luca frantically climbing onto a stool to smash the camera to pieces while coaching his mother on their false alibi.

The entire courtroom sat in dead, suffocating silence. You could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.

Several jurors and court clerks looked at Luca and Wendy with undisguised horror and disgust.

Judge Sterling slowly lowered his glasses. His face turned dark and thunderous with absolute rage. He looked directly at the bailiff standing near the door.

“Lock the courtroom doors,” the judge ordered, his voice echoing like rolling thunder.

The heavy oak doors clicked shut and locked automatically.

Judge Sterling pointed a shaking finger straight at Luca and Wendy.

“Bailiff, place Mr. Luca Moretti and Mrs. Wendy Moretti under immediate arrest for attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery, conspiracy to commit insurance and real estate fraud, and tampering with evidence.”

*Click. Click.*

Before Luca could even draw another breath, two armed bailiffs crossed the room with lightning speed, slammed Luca and Wendy against the defense table, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around both of their wrists.

“No! Wait! This is a setup!” Luca shrieked, thrashing wildly as he was hauled toward the holding cells in disgrace. “Jessi! Please! Think of our family! Drop the charges!”

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply looked down at my sleeping daughter, gently kissed her forehead, and watched as the men and women who had tried to destroy us were dragged out of the room in chains.
