Chapter 10 - The Last Road

Two months later, the cabin was fully alive.

Smoke curled lazily from the stone chimney into the crisp mountain air. A newly built wooden treehouse sat perched high in the branches of a giant cedar tree near the edge of the lake, complete with a rope ladder and a wooden sign nailed to the door that read LILY'S FORT — KEEP OUT (ESPECIALLY DADDY).

Down on the front porch, Grizz sat in a worn wooden rocking chair, a cup of black coffee resting on the small side table beside him.

The road behind them was long, dusty, and paved with broken promises and old violence. But as he looked out across the shimmering surface of the lake, watching Elena chase Lily through the tall grass while Tank and Slash argued good-naturedly over who was going to flip the burgers on the grill, he knew one thing for certain.

Some roads didn't have an end. They just led you back to where you were supposed to be all along.

Grizz raised his coffee mug in a silent toast to the empty horizon, the wolf-and-compass tattoo catching the afternoon sun as it filtered through the pines.

The ghost on Route 66 was finally laid to rest.

And the outlaws had finally come home.
