Chapter 3 - The Trojan Horse

Forty-five minutes later, a matte-black military transport vehicle pulled up silently to the security gates of the Carter estate. The private security guards, accustomed to seeing limousines and luxury sports cars, stared in absolute shock as two heavily armed tactical operators in unmarked black combat gear stepped out into the rain.

I wasn't wearing my muddy field uniform anymore. I had scrubbed the dried blood from my skin, strapped a lightweight Kevlar vest beneath a sleek, high-end designer evening jacket, and secured my tactical comm-link inside my ear canal. My silver-streaked hair was pulled back into a tight military bun, and my eyes were sharp as shards of broken glass.

The security gate intercom buzzed. "H-Hello? This is private property. You cannot park here—"

I walked directly up to the camera lens, tapped my tactical override badge against the scanner, and spoke into the intercom. "This is Major Evelyn Carter, United States Air Force Special Operations. Open the gates, or my team will breach the perimeter using explosive ordinance."

There was a frantic click, and the heavy wrought-iron gates swung wide open.

Inside the mansion, the birthday party was reaching its peak. The dining room chandeliers blazed with golden light, and soft classical music drifted through the high-ceilinged hallways. Guests were laughing, clinking crystal glasses, and indulging in imported caviar, completely unaware that the global empire holding them together was about to collapse.

I pushed open the massive double doors of the foyer without knocking.

The heavy thud of my combat boots against the marble floor instantly killed the music. Conversations died mid-sentence. Dozens of wealthy socialites turned around, their wine glasses frozen halfway to their mouths, staring in sheer disbelief at the sight of me walking back into the house flanked by two heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear.

My father was standing near the fireplace, holding a glass of aged scotch while recounting one of his classic corporate victory stories to a group of senior bank executives. His face flushed a deep, ugly shade of crimson when he saw me.

"Evelyn!" Charles barked, marching across the room, his eyes bulging with furious indignation. "Have you completely lost your mind?! I told you to get out of my house! And who the hell are these armed thugs?!"

He tried to wave over his private security detail, but federal marshals had already quietly secured every exit, blocking the doors and locking down the perimeter protocols.

"Dad," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room with absolute authority. "You really should have checked my background before you disowned me. Because it turns out I'm not the embarrassing failure you think I am."

Charles sneered, stopping a few feet away from me, his chest heaving with rage. "You are nothing! A pathetic little girl playing soldier because you couldn't hack it in the real world! Security, throw her out—"

"Quiet, Charles," a deep, booming voice echoed from the hallway.

Every head snapped toward the double doors as a four-star general’s limousine pulled directly up to the front steps, and General Thomas Vance—flanked by two armed military police officers and a team of federal cyber-investigators—strode into the foyer.

The color drained entirely from my father’s face. The glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor, the amber liquid pooling around his expensive leather shoes like blood.

General Vance walked past the trembling guests, stopped directly in front of my father, and pinned him with a gaze so intensely lethal that several corporate executives instinctively stepped backward.

"Charles Carter," General Vance stated, his voice ringing like a bell through the silent mansion. "By order of the President of the United States and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, you are under arrest for high treason, international terrorism financing, and conspiracy to assassinate an allied head of state."
