Crown of Curves and Cash

The final dismantling of Montgomery & Hayes Law happened on a rainy Tuesday morning.

Marcus Vance sat in his office staring at the foreclosure notice taped to the glass door. The firm had officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Every major corporate client had terminated their retainers, and the state bar association had launched an ethics inquiry into Marcus’s past billing practices—an inquiry miraculously triggered by an anonymous dossier filled with ironclad evidence.

The elevator doors at the end of the hallway dinged open.

Clara Moretti stepped out, flanked by two of Salvatore’s senior legal advisors. She wasn't wearing an oversized coat or hiding her curves. She wore a sharp, tailored ivory trench coat over her emerald dress, her head held high, stepping with the unshakeable confidence of a woman who owned the building.

Which, technically, she did. Vanguard Capital had just purchased the entire commercial tower at foreclosure auction.

Marcus stumbled out of his office, his hair disheveled, his tie crooked. He stared at Clara as if she were a ghost.

"Clara... please," Marcus choked out, his pride completely shattered. "You bought the building? Tell Moretti to call off the dogs. I'll lose my license! I'll lose everything!"

Clara stopped walking, turning her head slowly to look down at her ex-husband with cold, crystal clarity.

"You didn't lose everything, Marcus," Clara said calmly. "You just lost the life you stole from me. You built your career on stepping on people you thought were beneath you. Well, look down now. You're right where you belong."

Without another word, Clara turned on her heel and walked into what used to be Arthur Sterling’s executive corner office—the very office where Marcus had once laughed when she called to ask for divorce alimony.
