Chapter 2 - The Shadow Unit Reassembles

By 3:00 AM, the quiet, tree-lined suburbs of Livingston County were undisturbed, resting beneath a blanket of heavy fog. But beneath the surface, a silent storm was brewing. While Sheriff Rick Barnes sat comfortably in his luxury leather armchair at his suburban estate, pouring himself a glass of expensive Kentucky bourbon and gloating over his absolute immunity, the global logistics network of the Reaper was already spinning into motion.

My phone buzzed with an encrypted satellite transmission.

“Team Alpha touching down at private airstrip 04 in twenty minutes. Equipment manifests confirmed. Awaiting your coordinates, Commander.”

It was Marcus, my former second-in-command, a man who could hack into any government database or disable a municipal grid before breakfast. Alongside him were Diaz, our explosives and reconnaissance specialist, and Miller, our tactical logistics expert. They hadn't worked together in seventeen years, but the moment I called, they didn't ask questions. They didn't ask for a retainer. They only asked one thing: Who needs to be dismantled?

I left Sarah sleeping in the family waiting room at Mercy General, under the watchful eye of Dr. Harold Donnelly, who promised to guard Tyler with his life. I drove my dented, rust-bucket pickup truck out to an abandoned logging road near the county line, parking beneath the heavy canopy of pine trees.

Ten minutes later, a matte-black military transport helicopter touched down silently in the clearing, kicking up a whirlwind of pine needles before cutting its rotors. The cargo ramp lowered with a hydraulic hiss, and three figures stepped out into the mist. They wore civilian black tactical gear, their faces hardened by decades of covert operations, moving with the terrifying efficiency of apex predators.

Marcus stepped forward first, his eyes scanning the treeline before locking onto me. He threw a sharp, respectful military salute, then broke into a wide grin, pulling me into a bone-crushing bear hug.

"Damn, boss," Marcus muttered, stepping back to look at my faded flannel shirt and work boots. "You really mastered the art of camouflage. For a second, I thought you turned soft."

"Softness is a luxury I afforded myself for my son," I replied coldly, my voice devoid of warmth. "And tonight, some local animals took that away from him."

Diaz stepped up, tossing a heavy titanium tactical case onto the hood of my truck. "We ran a preliminary intelligence sweep on your target while we were crossing airspace. Sheriff Rick Barnes. Local fiefdom lord, controls the county judges, skims drug seizure money through local shell companies, and operates a private militia of corrupt deputies who think they own the state of Colorado."

"He didn't just abuse his power," I added, stepping closer to the tactical case as I unlatched the heavy metal locks, revealing rows of encrypted communication gear, thermal optics, and breaching charges. "He shot my seventeen-year-old son in both knees because Tyler crossed his path. Then he laughed in his face."

Miller’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He pulled out a digital tablet, displaying the architectural schematics of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department and Barnes's private fortified ranch.

"If we hit his precinct, we can access his encrypted financial ledgers, his internal affairs cover-up files, and the digital logs of every payoff he's taken from local cartels and corrupt land developers," Miller reported crisply. "We don't just arrest him, Dennis. We erase his entire empire down to the foundation."

"No," I said, looking out over the dark valley toward the town lights where the courthouse clock tower stood tall. "Arrest is too kind. Barnes thinks he's a god in this county. I’m going to show him what happens when he steps into the dark."

We synchronized our tactical chronometers. The sun would rise in four hours. And by the time the morning light hit the Livingston County courthouse, Sheriff Rick Barnes was going to learn a very expensive lesson in humility, pain, and absolute terror.
