Chapter 3 - The Doorway Between Past and Future

Cole climbed the wooden stairs slowly, each step groaning under his weight as the scent of old cedar, dust, and rain grew stronger. When he reached the second door on the left, his hand hovered over the peeling white paint for a long moment. His breath caught in his throat. He balled his hand into a fist and knocked twice—soft, hesitant, respectful. Inside the room, the sound of a book hitting the floor echoed through the thin wood, followed by a sharp intake of breath. "Who is it?" Vera’s voice called out, instantly recognizable yet tighter, laced with a defensive wariness that cut straight to his soul. "Vera," he said softly, closing his eyes as he spoke her real name aloud for the first time in four months. "It's Cole." Silence fell over the room—a heavy, suffocating silence that felt like the vacuum before a storm. Then came the sound of hurried footsteps, the scrape of a chair, and the heavy turning of a lock. The door pulled open, and there she was. She looked thinner in her face, her hair shorter and unevenly grown at the sides, wearing an oversized canvas jacket that barely concealed the gentle curve of her nineteen-week pregnancy. But it was her eyes that stopped him dead in his tracks—eyes that had once looked at him with warmth and trust now hardened into chips of arctic ice. For three seconds, neither of them moved or breathed. Vera looked at him as if she were staring at a ghost conjured by her own trauma. "How did you find me?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot rage. "Marcus found a hardware store receipt signature on a digital cross-reference," Cole answered honestly, his hands open and empty at his sides, palms facing outward to show he posed no threat. "I didn't bring security, Vera. I didn't bring corporate fixers. It's just me." "You have a hell of a nerve showing your face here," she spat, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides as tears welled in her eyes, though she refused to let them fall. "After what I heard in that hallway? After you and Isabelle treated my entire existence like a scheduling conflict? Get off this property, Cole. Right now, or I swear to God I'll scream until Clara comes up here with her shotgun." "I know," Cole said, taking a slow, deliberate half-step backward to give her space. "I know what you heard. And I deserve every word of your anger. But I didn't fly down here to fight with you, Vera. I flew down here because I've spent four months tearing this country apart looking for you, not to control you or lock you away, but because you and this baby are the only things that matter to me anymore." Vera let out a bitter, choked laugh, shaking her head. "Oh, save the speech for the board of directors, Cole. I'm a civilian, remember? A liability on your precious freight ledgers. A problem awaiting its resolution."
