Chapter 2 - The Soft Glow Beneath the Mud

Late that afternoon, the world above me shifted. The phone hidden beneath my shoulder vibrated with a muffled, low-frequency hum against the damp earth. Mara immediately stopped talking, turning her head toward the lawn. She said it was probably just the automatic sprinkler timer acting up, although everyone on the property knew the sprinkler control box was securely attached to the opposite side of the fence. My husband did not answer her. He slowly set his coffee mug down, stepped off the porch, and began scanning the disturbed dirt around my shoulders while his family suddenly stopped laughing.

"What was that?" he muttered, his eyes narrowing.

I kept my lips tightly sealed around the straw, breathing in shallow, silent gasps. He crouched down beside my mound of earth, pressed one broad hand flat into the wet mud, and began frantically searching near my right shoulder.

"You didn’t bring something out here with you, did you?" he whispered, venom returning to his voice.

His fingers scraped aggressively against the heavy plastic of the freezer bag. Panic flared hot in my chest, but I forced my body to remain completely limp. Before his fingers could hook around the edge of the bag and pull it free, I jammed my buried thumb against the side button beneath the soil, waking the display.

The phone screen lit up with a harsh, bright white glare through the cloudy plastic, illuminating the dark soil around my neck.

A calm, professional voice came directly through the damp dirt from the speaker phone.

"Sheriff’s dispatch," the woman's voice stated clearly. "We hear you. We have your precise GPS location locked. Keep him talking. Units are dispatched and heading down your road right now."

My husband froze, his hand paralyzed inside the mud. For three terrifying seconds, the entire backyard fell into a dead, absolute silence. Then his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. He ripped the plastic bag out of the earth, staring at the active emergency call screen with wide, disbelieving eyes. "You bitch!" he screamed, dropping the phone onto the grass as if it were a venomous snake, lunging toward my face with both hands outstretched.

Before his fingers could wrap around my throat, the heavy front gate of our property violently splintered inward. The blinding flash of red and blue emergency strobes painted the entire backyard in flashing neon light, accompanied by the earth-shattering roar of heavy sirens cutting through the suburban quiet.

"County Sheriff! Nobody move! Get your hands on your head right now!"

Deputies swarmed the lawn from every direction, their tactical boots tearing up the manicured grass as they tackled my husband directly onto the porch steps. His mother shrieked in outrage, demanding to know what right the police had on private property, while Mara burst into hysterical tears, trying to back away toward the fence line. Two paramedics rushed past them, dropping to their knees beside my makeshift grave with shovels, medical bags, and emergency blankets.

"Hold on, ma'am, we're getting you out right now," a medic yelled over the chaos, frantically digging the dirt away from my shoulders with his bare hands while another slid a oxygen mask over my face. As the suffocating weight lifted off my chest and the fresh night air hit my skin, I closed my eyes and whispered a silent prayer of gratitude. The nightmare was finally over, but the reckoning for my abusers was only just beginning.
