Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

The afternoon shadows lengthened across the estate, casting long, barred patterns across the floor as Alessandro processed her proposition. An alliance between the East Coast's most elusive kingpin and the city's most incorruptible detective was nothing short of blasphemy. It violated every rule of the underworld and every oath of the badge. Yet, looking at the fierce determination burning in Arya’s eyes, Alessandro knew she was entirely right. They were hunting the same shadow.

"Eat," Alessandro commanded quietly, pointing toward the bowl of broth. "If you die of starvation before we find the men who shot you, my efforts tonight will have been a complete waste of time."

Reluctantly, Arya picked up the spoon, her muscles protesting with every millimeter of movement. She forced down the warm broth, her strength slowly returning with every swallow. Alessandro watched her with a strange, lingering fascination. Most people who entered his orbit—whether rivals, informants, or terrified debtors—broke under the sheer psychological weight of his presence. Arya Veil merely sharpened her teeth against it.

Just as she finished, the heavy oak door of the suite burst open. Viktor strode into the room, his face grim, holding a thick manila folder and a decrypted tablet. He cast a wary, suspicious glance toward the bed where the police detective lay resting, but wisely kept his mouth shut in front of his boss.

"Speak, Viktor," Alessandro instructed, walking over to the study desk.

"You were right, Boss," Viktor reported, placing the tablet down. "We tracked the burner phone signals originating near the bridge where the detective was ambushed. The call logs led us straight to Captain Thomas Vance of the city's internal affairs division—the exact man overseeing Detective Veil’s financial corruption task force."

Arya’s breath hitched in her throat. Captain Vance. Her direct superior. The man who had personally signed off on her assignment files and encouraged her to dig deeper into "untracked municipal accounts." He hadn't been sending her to uncover corruption; he had been feeding her straight into a slaughterhouse.

"Vance," Alessandro murmured, tasting the name like poison on his tongue. He turned his cold, deadly gaze toward Arya. "It appears your department is even more rotten than you suspected. Your captain didn't just want you quiet; he wanted you blamed for the very embezzlement he was orchestrating."

Fury, cold and absolute, surged through Arya’s veins, momentarily overriding her physical pain. She threw the blanket off her legs, swinging her feet over the side of the bed before her knees buckled under her weight. Alessandro was across the room in a fraction of a second, catching her by the waist before she could crash against the floor.

His strong arm supported her weight effortlessly, pulling her close against his chest. For a fleeting second, the terrifying distance between cop and criminal vanished, replaced by the raw, kinetic heat of two people standing in the eye of a hurricane. Arya looked up into his dark, searching eyes, her breath catching as she realized how close she was to the man she had sworn to lock away forever.

"Let me go," she whispered, though she made no actual move to push him away.

"I told you before, Detective," Alessandro replied, his voice dropping to a low, magnetic register that sent a shiver down her spine. "You aren't walking anywhere tonight. If you want Captain Vance, we take him together—on my terms."

Viktor discreetly cleared his throat, staring fixedly at the opposite wall as Alessandro gently lowered Arya back onto the edge of the mattress, keeping his hand resting firmly on her shoulder to ensure she didn't try any more foolish heroics.

"What are your terms, Romano?" Arya asked, her voice steady, masking the rapid beating of her heart.

"Simple," Alessandro said, a dangerous, predatory grin spreading across his face. "We don't arrest him. We expose him so publicly, so brutally, that the entire municipal government collapses under the weight of its own filth. And you play the bait."
