Chapter 4 - Blood and Brotherhood**

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway seemed to hum with a deafening, electric intensity.

Julian stopped twenty feet from where Daniel stood frozen. A slow, mocking smile crept across his face, the old scar on his left cheek pulling tight as he looked at his older brother standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a local police detective and an eight-year-old girl in a hospital gown.

“Well, well, big brother,” Julian said, his voice smooth, dripping with an easy, lethal sarcasm that echoed off the tile walls. “I always wondered what a billionaire savior looked like up close. Turns out, you still dress like you’re trying to impress a federal judge.”

Detective Brooks immediately placed her hand on the butt of her service weapon, stepping defensively in front of Lily’s bed. “Freeze! Stay right where you are! Identify yourself!”

Julian didn't even glance at the detective. His cold eyes remained fixed entirely on Daniel. “Put the hardware away, officer. You’ll only embarrass yourself. Besides, I’m just here to pick up a couple of misplaced inventory items.”

“You’re dead,” Daniel finally spoke. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a deadly, suppressed fury that made the nurses at the station dive for cover behind their desks. “I buried you in Chicago in 2014. I paid the coroner. I watched the casket go down.”

Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. “You paid the wrong coroner, Daniel. A clever syndicate trick. You thought you could wash your hands of the family business, pack up your millions, and play the noble philanthropist in small-town Ohio while the rest of us kept the engine running? Sarah’s Haven was my creation from day one. Your foundation just provided the shiny legal umbrella while we moved kids across state lines like chattel.”

Daniel took one slow, deliberate step forward. The polite billionaire was completely gone; the apex predator of the Chicago underworld had broken through the concrete crust of twenty years of peace.

“You used my wife’s name,” Daniel said softly, every word weighted with lethal intent. “You named your human trafficking ring after Sarah’s Haven.”

“She was a weak link, Dan. Just like these brats and their mother,” Julian sneered, gesturing vaguely toward Room 412. “Speaking of which, where is the mother? She was supposed to stay locked in that basement until the container truck arrived from Toledo.”

“She’s right behind you, you son of a bitch.”

The harsh, ringing voice echoed down the corridor from the elevator bank.

Julian spun around sharply.

I stood at the end of the hallway, my clothes torn, my hands caked in dried blood, holding a heavy chrome IV pole like a baseball bat. My eyes burned with a fury that no amount of captivity could extinguish. Behind me, three cruisers with flashing red and blue lights slammed to a halt outside the glass doors, officers pouring out with drawn weapons.
