Chapter 4 - Dawn on the Ninth Floor

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, amber wash across the skyline and illuminating the quiet expanse of Suite 904. Ethan sat in an armchair by the window, a cup of dark coffee cooling untouched on the side table. Lily was still fast asleep in the adjacent master bedroom, tucked safely beneath heavy down comforters, her gray stuffed bunny resting on the pillow beside her.
On the table nearby, the red roses caught the morning light. The bruised petals seemed to have smoothed out under the care Lupita had given them the night before. They didn't look like flowers from a funeral anymore; they looked like a tribute to endurance.
A soft knock sounded at the double doors of the suite.
Ethan stood up quietly, walked across the carpet, and opened the door. Lupita stood in the hallway, wearing a sharp, tailored navy-blue blazer over a simple white blouse—the uniform of a hotel executive, though she had forgone the corporate corporate rigidity in favor of her usual calm, grounded presence. In her hands, she held a thick leather binder and a freshly printed daily operational report.
“Good morning, Mr. Vance,” Lupita said, her voice steady and clear. “I hope Miss Lily slept well.”
“Like a rock,” Ethan replied, stepping aside to let her enter. “Come in. What’s the status downstairs?”
Lupita walked over to the mahogany desk, placing the binder down with a quiet, efficient motion. “Harrison Cole arrived from corporate at 5:00 a.m. He’s already reviewing the personnel restructuring files we discussed last night. All front-desk staff have been recalled for mandatory retraining on guest dignity protocols, effective immediately. And the local vendor contracts are being audited to ensure our cleaning and service staff are receiving top-tier benefits and hazard stipends.”
Ethan poured a fresh cup of coffee and handed it to her. Lupita accepted it with a grateful nod.
“And how do you feel about your first official day behind the grand mahogany desk?” Ethan asked, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.
“Like I’m standing on the edge of a very high roof,” Lupita admitted honestly, looking out the massive glass windows toward the bustling streets below. “But I also feel like for the first time in fourteen years, the Grand Regent is actually standing on solid ground.”
“Good,” Ethan said, walking over to the vase of roses and gently touching one of the deep red petals. “Because tomorrow is the anniversary.”
Lupita turned her head, her eyes softening with quiet understanding. “The anniversary of your wife’s passing.”
“Three years,” Ethan said, his voice dropping slightly as the memories pressed in—the cold hospital room, the sterile hum of the oxygen monitors, Sarah’s hand growing cold in his, and her final words whispered against his palm: ‘Don’t let them make you cold, Ethan. Never let the walls of these big buildings make you forget what it feels like to be invisible.’
“She would be proud of you, Mr. Vance,” Lupita said quietly. “Not because you own this hotel, but because you didn't let them change who you are when you walked through those revolving doors.”
Before Ethan could reply, a soft patter of bare feet echoed down the hallway from the bedroom. A moment later, Lily appeared in the doorway, wearing her favorite oversized pajama shirt, rubbing her eyes with one hand while clutching her gray bunny by the ear with the other.
She stopped when she saw Lupita in her new blazer, then looked up at her father.
“Daddy?” Lily asked sleepily. “Who is this?”
Ethan walked over, kneeling down beside his daughter and lifting her up into his arms.
“This is Lupita, sweetheart,” Ethan said, smiling as Lily rested her chin on his shoulder, exactly as she had done in the lobby the night before. “She’s the new manager of this hotel. And she makes sure that nobody ever has to stand out in the cold when they’re looking for a place to rest.”
Lily blinked, considering this for a moment, then looked at Lupita and gave her a small, sleepy wave.

“Good morning,” Lily mumbled.
Lupita smiled back, her eyes shining with unshed tears as she raised her hand in greeting. “Good morning, Princess Lily. Welcome home.”
